I took the plunge...Finally.

I turned my book into an ebook.
I tried and tried to get the text formatted so that Lulu's epub checker would give it the thumbs up.
Despite downloading programs Lulu recommended and running it through validate at three press.com which incidental gave it the okay. Lulu's checker said it had errors. So I abandoned going with Lulu.
I went with smashwords instead. Their guidance was clear and concise. They took my raw .doc format then "abracadabra" produced all the formats and it was free.

I tried once to use Createspace at Amazon.com. I had similar frustrations. I think my drafts are still there. Congratulations on your success at Smashwords. I believe their ebooks go to all ereaders. So, it's just a matter of enough publicity to draw buyers.

I note that my colleagues at L & l Dreamspell are burning up the Internet with bogs, guest blogs, blog tours, reviews, and then they also go to conferences and book signings and festivals. I note that Ghost Orchid sells in direct proportion to its publicity.

On good celebrity endorsement will send us on our way...:-)

Smashwords is a friendly place. I also like the fact that there are multiple formats available, so an author isn't stuck with an e-book that fits only one reader.

Since you are in charge of promoting your book, I wouldn't worry too much about having rights to promote it. Why not request that PA do this for you?

You can add your book to Smashwords with a free sample download, but if you charge for the downloading of the whole book, you need the e-book rights from PA.
