The Big Picture Empty
PostSubject: The Big Picture   The Big Picture EmptySun Sep 26, 2010 4:46 pm

This event, or series of events, is a long way from being current, but I couldn't find a better place to post it.

I remember watching this TV series growing up. This segment from 1958, "Beyond the Call," which has to do with the Medal of Honor, presents, if nothing else, a picture of the military hero as he was seen during that time period.

I like the fact that it uses no names. The heroes, though real individuals, are referred to anonymously. But, for a couple of minutes, right in the middle, one hero, called only, "a young lieutenant from Texas," is discussed, and I recognize the battle scenes. They are taken from a movie called "To Hell and Back."

Honoring those who sacrificed their lives doing their duty is worthy. Glorifying war is not.

Had we come to that conclusion, as a culture, in 1958? It took Vietnam, I think, for us to reach that stage of enlightenment.

The enlightenment was not widespread. The vets from that ill-fated war were not treated as the heroes they were. When men put their lives on the line for their country, they should be honoured. The politicians should have been vilified, not the troops.

Yes, their was a touch of sarcasm in my response. We can glorify the warrior without glorifying the war. The soldier doesn't get to pick and choose his or her battles. That's up to the commanders, who get their orders from the politicians.
