LC,
It was Derek's second attempt to win an Olympic medal. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he pulled out of the opening round of the 400 metres 90 seconds before his heat was due because of an injury to his achilles. Prior to the 1992 Olympics, he had undergone eight operations due to injuries. When his father came onto the track, he said, "You don't need to do this."
Derek replied, "Yes, I do."
If he hadn't finished the race, no one would have remembered that he made it to the semi-finals. Despite the overwhelming pain, he wanted to cross the finishing line. For millions of British Athletics fans, it was very emotional watching him fail and succeed at the same time.
