| 7/2/2010 Hi.. Just read PA is turning their books into paper backs for $9.95 ? I don't know if that means they'll be smaller ? They claim it would be competative with the Supermkts. Cheers..Joe |

| I see PA mentioned here often. But the references always assume everybody knows what it is. I must be the only one who doesn't. What is it? Published Authors? Are they also a publisher? |

| Al,
PublishAmerica is a free book publishing company that is either loved or hated.
The riot will now begin.
A lot of us met on their messageboard. You have missed a lot of fights. A few disgruntled authors teamed up and went forth as crusaders against PA. Their mission was to show us how easy it was to get published and how we should just keep at it until it happened. We tried to defend ourselves to no avail. Aw Phooey, sorry you missed it all. |

A list here shows similarly priced books with 54 - 540 pages. http://www.publishamerica.net/PAperback.htm |

| Now they tell me they have selected my book to stay always as a paperback.
The price is ridiculous. $24.95 now, but if I buy they will lower the price to $9.95
Sick of it. They think of a new idea every second. |

| I got a similar email, saying that my book would remain a softcover @ 19.95 - its starting price. I'm guessing that means they are satisfied with sales. Hopefully, they will be back on Amazon and B&N at that price.

| I received the same email - Arirang: The Bamboo Connection at $24.95. I haven't sold one trade paperback copy in over a year; my own ebook (received the ebook rights) at Kindle has sold quite a few copies.
My belief is that my book is staying at $24.95 and not being converted to hard cover only because I did not use their coupon to buy softcovers and $9.95 covers to get my book converted to the $9.95. It just didn't seem logical to me that their wise move to sell the books at an affordable price should include me being forced to buy x number of soft and new paperback cover books before they would convert my book to paperback at $9.95. At this point, if you want your book to sell at $9.95, you have to buy a minimum number of books.
I just can't keep up with them. They certainly have a creative person coming up with a new sales scheme each day. I give them credit for that. |

| ... which is the point of the exercise. The schemes are not designed to give PA books a better chance of making sales to the general public; they are designed to persuade authors to buy their own books. The business model relies on authors buying copies directly from PA. AW bashers warn everyone ad nauseam that this is the business model. It is their mantra. It is repeated often so that the warning is always visible to those who have never heard of PA. I just wish they would follow a more worthwhile crusade. |

| I am thinking of deleting my website. I am not a book salesperson.
I don't need any books. My book is for sale on the Parkinson's disease website and priced too high. Buyers arre directed to Amazon. Then I will respond to the emails that I have no way to sell my book and have sufficient for myself. I will further add that it would be more beneficial for them to lower the price to bookstores. |

| I think PA's move to $9.95 books is a wise and clever one. I believe eventually all new author books will come out in hard cover at a high price and then $9.95 paperbacks and ebooks (pricing I'm not sure of). I believe they will sell a ton more books to authors, both hard covers (I still want 5 hard covers at an affordable price) and the $9.95 books. As always, a few indie stores and a few traditional stores will carry some PA books for local authors or some of the name people who publish with PA. I think eventually my $24.95 trade paperback will disappear or my contract will run out, one or the other. I really don't care. I think I saw somewhere that P.A. can print paperback books and profit at $3.99; so they can still discount to the authors who will sell their own books and make a little profit. I doubt many PA authors have become wealthy on their PA publications; but I may be wrong. There was just too much baggage.
Although at the rate of the daily gimmicks, I may be completely wrong and new schema may develop. I agree that they certainly are clear about their audience these days, so no one should be surprised.
I would still publish a limited market book with PA to save the trouble of using Create Space, one that I would give to people, certainly not one to sell.
I'd still keep a free web site up for those who know who we are to maintain a contact place. You never know who might be looking for you because of your book they pulled out of some used book store..... |

Al, That was too short of an explanation. AW is a writers website. They are very anti PA authors. They used to send out crusaders to warn us about them. We knew about them. We had them as our publisher. Absolute Write They have an entire section devoted to PA. |
