Nun excommunicated for abortion permission

A nun was ex-communicated because she allowed an abortion to be performed in a life-or-death matter. But if she goes to confession, it will be lifted.

Ignoring all the greater problems in this story, if you can be ex ex-communicated by just going to confession, what's the point of it all?

I guess she doesn't have enough money to buy an indulgence.

The one I wonder about is the nuns that have abortions because they get knocked up priests in L. America and Africa. How gets the rap for that one?
