| I've lived in Latin America so long (where Easter/Holy Week IS "the holidays", not Christmas) that the American Easter Bunny, egg hunt stuff seems alien and odd.
I'm sure most of you would find the local celebrations equally weird. There are stages on my block, with thrones and people wearing gold robes and acting out Krackpot Katholic Katharsis. Pilgrim parades in the street, uniformed teen-aged God Squads wandering around singing hyms.
Of course the REAL Holy Week tradition is:
1. Get the whole extended family together 2. Go to the beach 3. Eat and get drunk 4. Somebody drowns (optional, but widely exercised) |

| Probably drunk. Mexico isn't known for lifeguards. And there wouldn't be enough for all the beaches in Mexico, anyway.
You see beaches entirely covered with people during this time. Literally covered so you can't see the sand. People who are cooking on the beach, living in improvised tents for a couple of days. The aftermath is an enormous crust of litter. |

| I'm trying to understand the association of the Easter Bunny and the egg. Is there a rabbit with wings that lays eggs? Chocolate I can understand. |

| Chocolate might, indeed, be the universal language. Well, one of them, anyway.
I think the whole rabbitt/egg thing is fertility cult stuff? |

| I think you're right about the chocolate, lin. That and music, wonderful, beautiful music -- which I always need to surround myself with. Or go nuts. tra-la |

| Holidays are weird for us because of so many sub-families. They had a pre-Easter dinner last night for the other family at Lynn's, and burgers for lunch at their dad's, and came here for a supper of Tinga de Pollo.. The kids left a bit ago. Chris' parents weren't here - the were spending the day with Chris' brother and his family. Susan did join us. Her husband Jimmy is getting settled in Basra, where he will be for at least six months as a civilian contractor. There was no ..Tinga .. left.... None... They love the stuff. I like it (see recipe on Easter cooking thread) but they love it. Well, Susan doesn't like bell peppers, so I served them as a condiment instead of cooking them with the main recipe. They were all gone, too, as was the guacamole made with sun-dried tomatoes (a la Rick Bayless of PBS and Chris's favorite), the salsa, shredded cheese and green onions. Nothing was left. Clean-up was a breeze.
We had a good time.
