| 3/31/2010 Hi.. For over a month now I can't seem to get back to writing my murder mystery ! I'm stuck on Chapter 3, I avoid writing like the plague ! I'll divert my attention to other things and yet I'm getting the feeling maybe my writing part of my brain is all dried up for writing, Maybe all I had in me was four books that are published ? It's scary when you can't write a few pages ...What should I do ? Cheers...Joe... |

| I'm not writing at the moment, Joe. I have an outline for a story for the anthology but I haven't written it, or started to do any research.
Maybe you should do some online searching for some obscure part of the story. This will free up the creative side of your brain and it might throw up some exciting new story lines that you haven't thought of yet. Works for me.

| 3/31/2010 Shelagh.. I will try that, plus I sit and re-read the story again. I was going to write that last chapter of the book, since it has a very weird twist to it ( The ending is a shocker, I don't think anyone has thought of it yet ? ) I have done it in the past write the first chapter, then the last chapter, then again I don't want to throw myself out of sync.. Cheers...Joe |

| I always write my last chapter way before I get to the end. That helps me see where I am going.
I have done little writing lately except my caringbridge blog, but my daughter has renewed my interest in my Cuba book after many, many rejections. She's made me a great website, and the other day it struck me that I now have more credentials, which I previously lacked, since I have been selected as one of four distinguished alumni by my college for 2010. We have been filled with ideas that were stuck and going no where and it is excited to get past the barriers.
So, it will happen Joe. Write the last chapter. Just write what comes to mind. One time I did character sketches and that helped lighten up my writing as I got to know these people better.
You'll do it Joe. Just let it happen. Sometimes that works better than trying too hard.

| Joe, have you tried journaling? with journaling, you don't have a preset goal, you just write whatever pops into your head. It doesn't have to be about you current project, or any project at all. You just write what you think. the idea is to get your head out of the way and write from your heart. There are many resources for helping you get started. Here is the one I use currently:
http://www.markdavidgerson.com/vom.html
I can't take credit for finding it. Malcolm posted about it a few months ago. I purchased the book and CD shortly after that. I'm finding it very helpful.
Sometimes the block comes because you head thinks you should write it one way, while your heart knows that's not the way to go, so you get stuck. Journaling is a way to turn you head off.

| 3/31/2010 Ann.. Thanks, I will look into that, great idea. I think one of the reasons is I don't have any funny scenes in this murder mystery like the first one ; Clara Layten-The Chelsea Murders," Where she gets herself into all kinds of trouble. This is set in a mansion where all the murders are committed....I have to be quiet and re-read it from the beginning... Cheers..Joe |

| Try writing something else, maybe some verse or just a short tale about one of your other interests. Take a walk, have bubble bath and listen to music. When you feel truly rested don't set your target to high, ai, just for a few hundred words but don't feel bad if you only manage two hundred or so. Tomorrow try again and before you knowit you'll be back to the usual tappity tap self. |

| Very good advice from Billy. Take a break, watch, listen or read the news. They will have some murders to get you in gear. |

| Hi Joe I've been out of the loop for a few days as my ISP has been down due to their main exchange in north London getting damaged. Today it's back up ( yippee) and I've a lot of email to sift through.
What you are experiencing is not uncommon. You have been an avid contributor to this forum and writing your garden thread. You have been excercising your creative muscle a lot. Often a small break is all that is needed. All work and no play..........etc. Put the story on the back burner for a while and let it simmer, then pretty soon your inspiration will kick in and you will start writing again. Just be patient with yourself and relax. |

| I would suggest you leave the writing aside for now. Build a file on each character. How do they look. How do they react when...what would they never tell anyone.
Bring the characters alive in your own mind. More times than not, the writer makes up a character as he/she writes a story. It always leads to a block. Know the characters...bring them to life.
I have always spent 80% of my writing time coming to know my characters before I write one word.
Ask yourself; "What would Bob (character) do if he lost everything."
Hope this helps. |
