| 12/28/2009 Hi Everyone.. What are your thoughts on Mother's having their 5,6,7,8,9,10 year old daughters in beauty pageants ? There's a show on cable and I found it disgusting having a young girl at any of those ages mentioned dressed and made up as a adult, to me children should have a child's life not try to have them look like a sex kitten ? What are your thoughts ? It reminded me of Jo Beth Ramsey, same thing, over zealot mothers! Cheers...Joe... |

| It puts too much pressure on the kids. Kids should be allowed to be kids. Besides there is no absolute beauty. All beauty is relative to the perspective of the observer. Yep, all beauty is relative. |

| I love and admire parents who place their children in beauty pageants.
Might as well separate the sheep from the goats early on. If the chlld does not win first place--give them to another family-- an ugly one. |

| Again beauty and ugliness are relative to the perspective of the observer. There is no absolute beauty and no absolute ugliness. Kids should be allowed to be kids. I said it before and I'm saying it again, putting kids in beauty pagents only serves to put undue pressure on the kids. |

| My BIL and his wife were big into pageants for a long time with their daughter. Or should I say, his wife was. She got my niece into modeling as a baby and she modeled until she was about eight (she's 13 now). Really impressive portfolio -she's been in full-page magazine ads, on product packaging, even on a billboard. They just trickled off with it, though, as the competitiveness of it all was just too much. It was a positive experience, though, the kids who participate develop poise and confidence. |

That's really not true. If it were, magazine models and pageant winners wouldn't, to a large extent, all look alike. Sure, personal taste is an issue, but most people are drawn to certain features, like symmetry and height/weight proportion. The beauty industry isn't the trillion-dollar business it is selling people stuff that will make them look short, fat, and coarse-featured. |

| So, why do so many magazine models and pageant winners have eating disorders?
Preoccupation with body image is not a good thing.
And not all kids come away with positive experiences. Generally, at that age, they are not in it because it's what they want for themselves, but because of their parents' expectations. They are being exploited.
And how many actually look the way their make-up and air-brushed photos present them? Ann |

| Eating disorder is a strawman -the way so many ordinary people are overweight, one could call that an eating disorder, too. Not all models have eating disorders, anyhow, and preoccupation with any ambitious goal isn't a bad thing. Re exploitation, while there are famous cases of it, I don't believe that parents who foster ambition and high achievement in modeling, sports, or anything else are exploiting their kids. I think more kids could benefit from such exploitation, personally. It beats the ocean of mediocrity that most of us swim in. It's also my observation that extremely attractive people look that way with or without makeup. |
