My Thrift Shop Find Empty
PostSubject: My Thrift Shop Find   My Thrift Shop Find EmptyMon Nov 16, 2009 12:51 pm

So I like to prowl thrift shops -resale, consignment, Goodwill, whatever- once in awhile, to see what treasures lurk among the junk. I went to one downtown this past weekend and look what I found! A silk Pucci raincoat, looks like it's from the early 70's? for $25. Of course I snapped it up. What do you think? Is it loud enough?

Yes, it's plenty loud enough. Be sure to dress it down. Allow it the attention it deserves.

It makes me think of my mother. She wore Pucci a lot. During the 70's, that wasn't so loud.

I find when I dress loud, people pay more attention. Smile

Dear LC,
It is an awesome coat! I do not know why it makes me think of Phillis Diller. I think it will be equally startling, going or coming.

I have often eyed the sequined dresses at the Goodwill with a smile and a touch of longing. I do love the sparkling things. It must be the old crow in me.

Love,
Betty

Wow, Phyllis Diller and alj's mother. I'm starting to like the coat less and less...

LOL! You wouldn't want to wear something worn by a supermodel, would you? Guess who would win that contest ...

Actually, what I've been contemplating with this jacket is vanity sizing. I'm a size 8/10. This jacket is labeled size 12, and it's kind of small. People are so much fatter now, so companies vanity size their labels, allowing today's size 12 to pretend she's not yesterday's size 16.

I know. It's an American thing. I'm a size eight in America and Canada. I don't pay much attention to size labels. If it looks right, I buy it.

Yes, sizes have changed over the years, but It it wasn't for people who were overweight. The size change started in the more expensive lines, so women who wore 10's could wear 8's, then 6's. There were no 2's or 0's.

Comparing the coat to my mom's clothes was not meant as an insult, LC. My mother was known for her fashionable wardrobe,

from her early 20's into her 70's

Oh, I know, it just sounded funny. When one says, "That's something my mom would wear," it's usually not a Good Thing. Smile

Your mom looks great those pictures! In the first one, she looks a lot like you, in the 30-something pix your posted of yourself.

Anyone else rummage around thrift shops? Any great finds?

I buy stuff to dress my iPod up with. I've got my eye on a Chanel dress for it on eBay. Smile

I like shopping at places like Marshall's. If you go on a regular basis, you can find some good stuff. A couple of years ago I picked up a Jones New York dress pantsuit for $29.95, in a deep forest green, and added a Tignanello Italian leather handbag in the same color that I found on eBay for $19.95. It's my favorite fall/winter outfit still.

My dad loved keeping my mother in expensive clothes. I used to resent it, but I understand better now. She grew up on a farm during the Great Depression (the last one before this one), and her mother, a really good seamstress, made her school clothes out of calico feed sacks.

My ex thought my dad was foolish, and let me know he thought so right after we married, so I learned the thrift shop route pretty early.

Today, it's all about comfort, softness, and flattering colors rather than fashion, but once in a while, it's still fun.
