PostSubject: Hot!   Hot! EmptyThu Oct 08, 2009 1:58 pm

sunny sunny sunny sunny sunny

I was looking for a melting avatar. October should not be this hot and humid. It does not feel like strawberry weather at all! 95 and humidity of 78. Even my Jazzmin, who will weather anything to be by my side, had to give it up and go for the cool of the patio. Wooffer and Sara have more sense and just do not bother. Add that heat to my black ground cover and I feel that I have been in a frying pan all day.

BUT! I am ready for the strawberry plants to arrive. They will get here by the end of the day on the 14th. I hope we can keep them cool and alive until they are planted. Then they will have to be watered all day, every day until they root themselves.

A nice cold front would be welcome.

Love,
Betty

Here's wishing you one. The newscasters here are insisting that our first will be arriving tonight, but right now, stepping outside seems so like a steam bath that it is hard to breathe. Supposedly, we are about to get some hard rain tonight and early tomorrow, with cool temperatures after.

Maybe your heat and humidity will do the same.

Good luck with the strawberries. Try not to work too hard.

Hello Betty..

I hope it gets cooler for you. I've tried
growing Strawberries , first in pots, then in the ground.
I don't know what I do wrong ? Maybe too much sun ?
Not enough water ? Not enough fertilizer ? Your the expert
what do you do ? Here the sun is very strong in the Summer
it's 7,500 feet above sea level....Good luck with the plants.
Here it's 61 daytime , night 34..

Here we go again! Not another discussion about finding the perfect place to live!

I am in Texas and Ann, it is cool here now. We just had a discussion with some Texans that they thought it was cold, while we thought it was cool.

My husband said he had the cheapest utility month in September he'd had in years. No need for either air nor heat. August was the same.

I think it is what you are used to. They even say that wherever you live in the first year of your life is what your body becomes accustomed to.

Like my husband says, you can always put on more clothes on a cold day but there are only so many clothes you can take off on a hot one.

Your husband is a wise man, Carol.
Ann, when my National Guard outfit left for Louisiana on the first day of January, 1952 some men said at least it would be warm. When we woke up the first morning there was snow in the air. And dampness. Boy, what dampness.
I spent the winter of 1943-44 in Georgia and it was as miserable as the winter of 1944-45 in Luxembourg and Germany. A little warmer in Georgia, although not much, but damp, damp, damp.
I'll take the Connecticut Western Reserve in January anytime. Cold, yes, but not damp.

Oh, Dick,
My old hide crinkels up at 45 degrees and my bones feel brittle. I need a heating pad and a new boiled egg in my pocket to keep me warm.
David turns the heat up to 80. I do not need that. I like to have a cold nose.

If it ever snowed here, my eyes would dance around.

I remember never going out all winter long. And it was long. I love it here because it is hot from June to the end of October, and then November to June the weather is perfect....
cool with flowers and butterflies even in the dead of winter.

I do not think I could live in the city. I am too free here.

Love,
Betty

We are complete opposites, Betty. I checked out the forecast for the final Indy car race of the season in Homestead, Florida, today. It will be 92 degrees. Not once the entire summer did we get to 90. I'm glad you like it, Betty. I couldn't stand it.

I have lived in Florida so many years I just quit being concerned about the heat. One year when it was particularly oppressing, I had a meeting in Baton Rouge, LA.

When I walked outside it felt like a weight came down on my chest. The heat and humidity were so high that I could hardly breath. It was my first experience with a location that had hot weather more unbearable than a long summer in Florida.

I used to go to the desert in summer, but there the heat evaporated the sweat. Somehow it didn't feel as oppressive.

However, nothing beats winter here. Nothing.

I love winter and the snow. Everything looks so clean and there are no pesty insects. Outside work waits until spring. The air is fresh and invigorating. Sitting by a warm fire, drinking something warm - aaaaaah. Living in a place with four seasons provides change and the enjoyment that each season brings.
It's good that people have a choice in where to live so they can enjoy what appeals to them.
For those of you who like it hot & humid and enjoy staying indoors to tolerate the heat, good for you. For those who like the outdoors and fresh air, using physical energy and heavy clothing to keep warm, good for you.
Some may be caught in between and be in a place like Ohio.Hot! Icon_twisted

Abe,

Good post. There, are people in the northwoods who go south in the winter. One lady said she could never do that, that she loved being in the north: the freshness of a new snowfall, the fire in the fireplace, the hot cider, reading books all winter.

We go south for the month of March. Now that month is really grim in the north.

Abe, it isn't about enjoying being inside or being outside. We have at least as many days throughout the year when we can enjoy the outdoors.

I love snow, too. I don't get to enjoy it very often. I also love beaches and swimming and taking long walks on sunny days. I get to enjoy those things frequently.

I was born in the south, so this weather is what I know and am accustomed to. It isn't always perfect, but then, it isn't perfect anywhere.

I'm on Abe's side. Or was, until that crack about Ohio.
Hot! 921805

It may not be perfect here, but there's nothing like a long walk in the woods on a snowy January day, then a hot drink by a wood fire.
Winter in Upstate New York was wonderful. One day when it was 30 below zero we wandered out on frozen Lake Otsego to watch an auto race on the ice. Great fun, knowing the wood stove was burning at home. I wouldn't trade those sort of things for any other climate in the world.

Yeah, I have wonderful memories of picture postcard winters in Germany and Michigan and Idaho. I also have a few dominant memories (one that led to my short story, "The Ice Storm" in Romance of My Dreams Anthology" of driving in sleet and white-outs, blind, children so quiet it was unnatural, and the feeling of death calling.

I have wonderful memories of cross country skiing and downhill skiing, ice fishing, ice boat races and ice skating.

I have wonderful memories of the cabin in the mountains, dragging the bags of supplies across the crisp snow mounds, starting the fire in the cook stove and hiking while the frozen turkey legs unthawed and cooked all day until we returned to ready dinner in front of the fireplace, snowed in.

I also have memories of frozen toes and fingertips, miserable colds and runny noses, masks freezing at Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas plans ruined by blizzards.

Overall, I think it's driving in the snow that keeps me in Florida. If I didn't have to drive and could just enjoy the fireplace and camaraderie as the romantic snow falls outside the window, I could stand some winter.

Do we have to take sides? My only problem was with this part of Abe's post:

Quote :

like the outdoors and fresh air, using physical energy and heavy
clothing to keep warm, good for you.

I'm only saying that living in a warmer climate doesn't mean the people there prefer to stay inside, or that they don't enjoy being outdoors in fresh air and using physical energy.

Isn't there a saying somewhere that people shouldn't talk politics, but should stay on safe topics like the weather?

It snowed in Wisconsin yesterday. But we are in Texas and it is actually cold here. It was in the 40s when we started out this morning.

I am running out of the warm clothes I packed for the trip home.
