My thoughts: He is rather disgusting to me. I am glad I am not married to him.

I don't care who he had sex with --that is his business and whoever elses--I don't want to hear about it.

I do not admire him.

He set hmself up to be blackmailed--no sympathy from me.

Next he will write a best-selling book.

Got to disagree with you on this one Alice. I think Letterman is very good at what he does. Not as good as Carson, but better than most of the others. I liked Jack Paar a lot too, and I can watch Leno sometimes.

Letterman's humor is not for everyone, but it's the kind that I like. It's smart, funny, and makes you think, and you never know when he's being serious or when he's putting you on.

His sex life is his own business, and I think he did the right thing by admitting what he'd done, and telling the would be blackmailer to get lost. If more people would handle it this way, there'd be a lot less people willing to try and get money from others for their silence.

I'm with E. Don here. I don't watch late-night TV, so I don't know much about Letterman, but I have to admire anyone with the courage to publicly admit to wrongdoing rather than allow a blackmailer to be in control.

Thanks E.Don and Ann.

I've known for a long time that if Bill Clinton had just admitted what he'd done with Monica, and then told the world that it was his own business, he'd have had a lot less problems with the Republican witch hunt that later came about.

It's a sad state of affairs, no pun intended, when they will go after a sitting President's sex life when they can find no proof of any other wrong doing. They were determined to smear him with something, and when he made the first mis-step about Monica, they had him. It was never anyone's business except his, Monicas, and Hilliarys, and he didn't do anything that many Presidents before him had done.

I'm glad Letterman chose to come out with it. Shows courage and determination.

Interestingly, I wrote an Amazon Short, "Affairs of the Heart - The Rulebook" in which I outlined the process to have an affair that includes damage control. But then, that would take consideration for other people. A man ruled by his desire often leaves his intellect somewhere else. Yes, women are also in that category too; they seem to generally be more discreet and take fewer risks.

Actually, DK, this is not the reality all of the time. Many people consent to sex, whether it be with someone they work with, someone they know, someone they've just met, or someone of power.

I have not read one single statement that says that any of the women in the Letterman case that are claiming harrassment. They seem to have been fine with the sex, just as he was. We have no way of knowing if he coerced any of them into anything, and to assume that he did is simply wrong. There are those women who scream sexual harrassment over every thing that comes up in the workplace, and I don't think that is why the law was put on the books. Back before the days of such things, most every man knew which women in the office or the assembly line objected to off color jokes or to a bit of harmless flirting, and which ones were ok with it. I have known as many women as I have men who used less than Sunday school language, and who could and would tell a dirty joke as quickly at any of the men. Most men didn't use lanugage around those women he knew didn't like it. The thing that happened though, was to make it easy for someone to bring a law suit against a company for harrassment, and it not only stopped legitimate cases, it almost stopped anyone in the workplace from talking to anyone else, especially someone of the opposite sex, and most all of the innocent flirting at work died away. Most women enjoyed it as much as the men did, but it became too costly to continue.

Sometimes, and in some cases, we became much to PC. I don't think that was the intent of the law, but it sure was the way it came to be.

P. Gordon, Leno is funny, there's no doubt about it, and I like the Tonight Show also, but his humor is just not as smart as Lettermans. That's why, over the years, Letterman has gotten most of the awards.

Don,
I agree with your analysis of the workplace. Giving a girl/woman a compliment has been turned into harrassment. I found that giving someone a compliment, whether it be the dress they wear, their hairstyle, or their figure, made that person feel good. Having the hair styled, or keeping the figure in trim and wearing clothes that compliment the figure is intended to attract the opposite sex. Saying nothing, after all the trouble to look pretty, is not good for the morale. How one flaunts their sexuality is another matter.

I am afraid he does not amuse me. I am really glad I didn't marry anyone remotely like him.

There is a huge difference between telling someone thy look nice and leering at them and having sex with them.

His apology was a bit ludicrous and to say he had no idea the impact on the women--where has he been?

I am not a Republican, nor judgmental, but give me a break--where is common ordinary decency?

I guess I am judgmental--I am ticked at him.

I had a business partner who was a flirt, always told women they looked nice or he liked what they were wearing or how they did their hair. He was a good friend. Many of his clients were in love with him in some way and my job was to meet with each of them after he died.

Professionally he never crossed the line. And we need to be aware of where those lines are, women as well as men.

It is also a matter of trust. I agree that Clinton's not covering up after being confronted would have been a good thing for all of us, and perhaps he could have concentrated on some serious issues that needed his attention.

I thought it was sad when Letterman began his apology and the audience laughed. Comedians usually have a very serious side that also needs to be recognized and respected.

I've never seen his show but he went to college in Muncie so he can't be all bad, can he?
What most people don't realize is the number of women who hurl themselves at any celebrity. Visit the hotel where a professional sports team is staying sometime, sit in the lobby and watch the Baseball Annies when a player comes along.
Glad I spent much of my life working among hardbitten newspaper women. No game playing with their type, but a lot going on behind the scenes. None of that crying about "what it did to me" because their eyes were wide open all the time. It still takes two to tango.

Well that does it---since he went to college in Muncie, no matter what he does, he is okay?

I will let him by with being just a creep, the college bit will let him off of being a super creep.

For the women who came onto him--no sympathy from me--to the ones who didn't--I am filled with pity--what a true creep!

It's not just Letterman, Alice. It's that way with the majority of celebrities in any field. Part of the lifestyle, that's all. There's a great deal of it in suburbia, too. In fact you can find it most anywhere. Most people just won't admit it.

I believe in privacy. A public person should have it as well. The press doesn't think so. Dirt sells. Public confessions stink.
I remember Evangelist Swaggert confessing with tears streaming down his face. I don't think the tears were of repentance but because he got caught doing the opposite of what he preached. I agree in exposing a fraud. In the case of consentual sex, it is a private matter. The wife can be pissed, and no doubt she is, but her beef is not with the public but with her husband. If she chooses to kill him or his mistress, then it becomes a public issue because the law is broken.
