| PA must be all right--they are moving to a bigger, better building. The PA bashers will not be happy, because they didn't dry up and blow away. Who would like to announce this to the folks at Absolute Write? or perhaps on Mel's forum? Just curious as usual. |

| 10/5/2009 Hi Everyone.. That's what I saw on the PA board, I have been trying to get a hold of them. I'm suppose to have a book signing next Saturday and the lady who owns the store is having "kittens" trying to get a hold of them, they don't answer their e mails, nor the phones and the e mail boxes are over loaded, very bad business , it makes the author look like a fool ! Cheers..Joe.. |

| They sent an e-mail this morning saying the move is completed and they are up and running again. |

That is how I found out too! You'd think they would tell us before they informed Twitter. The reason they emailed me was because they are having a moving sale. It is nice to be so important. Oh well--what else is new? |

| When I first saw this thread it said "PA has moved". I thought it was someone's PA like in Little House PA. My mistake. LOL Then I clicked on it and saw my name again connected with those of bashers. Maybe not meant to be that way. It just appears so. I imagine there are others far more worried about PA than I am. It seems fruitless for someone to worry about it, or my forum. The latter is a good place minus the fights. We don't have a lot of members, but it's there if people want to use it. I don't care what PA is doing. I don't care if they move to a nice building or not. I once did, and spent a lot of time caring, but not much anymore. I'll not publish with them again, but if others want to that's their choice. The kids and I have so much going on now that I can't hardly find time to post at any forum, much less my own. I spend most time at the stop smoking forum to talk with others who are beating their own nicotine addictions. I never realized what a bastard nicotine is until I quit. Far more formidable than PA taking away my buy button on Amazon. I am over four months clean now. Breaking an addiction seems a lot more productive to me than howling about some publisher. Wish I'd done it sooner.
My boy is finishing up his XCountry season best he can because he suffered an injury. He gets his learner permit this week and starts drivers ed immediately thereafter. My daughter made the 6th grade basketball team and that is beginning to come into full swing. I am looking for another job. We juggle doctor and dentist appointments and I wonder yes or no to the swine flu vaccine. My efforts are fully going to my family and my kids. They are growing fast and wont always be around. When I do pick up my writing again I will devote my time to that, writing. Period.
So since you mentioned me (again) I thought I'd stop by and get you up to date. I sincerely hope everyone has a good day. |

| Congratulations on your stopping smoking. Good to hear good news. We all knew you could do it. Now you know too. |

| Stopping smoking is a major gift to you and to your family, Mel. I know it's tough. My battle with weight control and exercize is my constant struggle; so I can identify with breaking addictions. I'm principal at a school where a handful of students stop at the tree in the morning to get their last smoke before coming on school grounds and risk suspension to grab another smoke during the day. It's pitiful that they start so young. My son started at 15 and his health is already so compromised I don't know if he can reclaim it if he quits. I keep hoping for the day. So, if you have any miracles I can pass his way (he'll quit when he's ready though ..........his mantra for the last 15 years) - I'd be grateful. Thanks for catching up. I think the PA thing has pretty much lost its attraction; business is business; and we are getting into the business of living it seems. Each person has to make their own choices and live with their own consequences. As always, it's a world of "buyer beware" and "read that contract thoroughly!" |

| Thanks for the Kudos, folks. I appreciate them.
DK, sorry there is no "miracle" to giving up cigarettes. If someone would have told me a year ago I would be quitting I'd probably told them off because they were crazy. But over time and thinking of my progressing age, I just realized if I were to do it then it had to be now. In May my insurance demanded a yearly physical which I had no idea I had to have. They said if I didn't then the insurance went bye bye. So I scheduled an appointment and just planned on talking with the doctor about smoking cessation. I toyed with the idea of actually quitting, but wasn't too serious about it. I smoked like a freight train the week before the appointment. Somehow in the process of talking I must have gone temporarily insane because I asked the doctor for meds and nic patches, and just up and quit. I still wonder how I did it.
And then I went through hell. The first two weeks were terrible, not just physically but also emotionally. I cried all the time, and had feelings that were worse then sorrow. But I made it. So far, so good anyway.
If your son is going to quit, then it has to be his decision. No amount of cajoling will change his mind until he is ready. He might surprise you though. Don't give up on him. For me, smoking was becoming a hassle. It cost too damn much for one thing. And I always got tired of looking for lighters, looking for my smokes, making sure I had enough smokes for the day etc etc. it was becoming a real pain. Maybe he will come to that point. I hope he will. And if he does then he must also know that smoking cessation is something that must simply be suffered through. There are no easy ways around it. Each toke off a cigarette hits your brain in seven seconds. Do some multiplication and you can see how addictive nicotine really is. people harp about the heroin and crack addicts. Cigarette addiction is no less than that, maybe worse because it is legal and EVERYWHERE. Everywhere you go someone is smoking. You have to be completely committed or else you might as well just smoke. I wish I had a prettier picture for you, but I don't. Just love your son and hope for the best. And if he decides to quit at some point be absolutely supportive because it will change his moods and outlook drastically for some time. He will need you. And Buproprion and Nicoderm patches in combo works wonders if used correctly. If I can quit while hubby still smokes, then I know there is hope for your son, or anyone else.
I have learned a lot. Just e-mail me if you have any more questions. I will help if I can. |

| Why do self-publishing companies feel the need to compete with PA all the time? On Dog Ear's site, it says:
"... our total cost for this package and options is $1,327, and our per unit book printing price is $4.28, and you get 10 free author copies of your book.) Publish America Costs Standard Paperback Publishing - $0 Hardcover set up - Not Available Custom Back Cover Only - Not Available Library of Congress Control Number - $0 Proofs - $0 WOW! - sounds great so far! But wait - now comes the hard part... Printing Services - $15.16 / unit X 100 units = $1516 Total Expenditure: $1,516 (for a company that doesn't charge to publish...)"
http://www.dogearpublishing.net/whydogearcomparison_publish_america.aspx
Why does Dog Ear assume that authors who publish with PA will be buying a hundred copies of their own books but, if they self-publish with Dog Ear, authors will be happy to receive ten copies for the princely sum of $1327? What about the extra ninety books? They will cost 90 x $4.28 = $385.20. Add that to $1327, the total cost for printing and publishing 100 books = $1712.20.
That is $196.20 more than the cost of 100 books from PA ... if, and only if, books cost $15.16 when ordered from PA. I only bought ten books and one hardcover copy. The ten paperback copies cost me less than $15.16 each (and that included shipping from the US to the UK).
Why do they make these comparisons when it is so easy to do the maths? I guess they think that first-time authors will read and believe everything on Dog Ear's website without checking out the facts. Now, where have I heard that before?
