My artistic rendering of the more than 1000 foot long Great Lakes bulk freighter James R Barker, the flageship of The Interlake Steamship Company.

Its a Great Lakes bulk freighter, also known as an ore boat. Here's an actual photo of it.

Very funny.
I just hope it doesn't end up (or down) with the Edmund Fitzgerald or so many, many others.

Looking at James R. Barker reminds me of the time, over 40 years ago, that my new husband and I were enlisted to take my grandfather to the launching of the John F. Kennedy, a ferry boat to be used in NY harbor, which was built at the shipyard his father founded, which he had run for many years, and which still held his name. It looked, that day, like a smaller version of the bulker in your pictures. My grandfather had cataract surgery a few years earlier, but the thick, rounded glasses did not do much to improve his eyesight. The new sideways launching system and the fact that the topsides had not yet been built drew this comment from my ninety-five year old grandfather: "Looks to me like the g**amn thing's gonna split in two before it hits the water."

I think the strip is probably just painted on, but the funnels are certainly made of metal and are certainly very heavy.

Ann, that has happened to a great many ore boats on the Great Lakes. It can be a hazardous way to earn a living.
