I think this three-minute fiction contest is only open to residents of the U.S.: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The challenge: write a story beginning with this line "The nurse left work at five o'clock." Length is up to 600 words of original work. Deadline is August 25th. The entry form displays when you click on the "submit your story" hyperlink at the end of the article about the contest. On the form's drop down menu, select OTHER (according to one of the commenters).

I planned to, but then ran out of time because I forgot that I was going to be out of town tomorrow and Monday instead of here writing the piece.

Yep, that excuse ought to work.
