Similes & Metaphors Empty
PostSubject: Similes & Metaphors   Similes & Metaphors EmptyMon Apr 06, 2009 3:30 pm

I’ll be leading a writing workshop at The Writers’ Gallery in May, so I was looking in my files and found something I wanted to share:

Have trouble writing about love?

Take a hint from the following metaphors and analogies found in high school essays compiled by a MN magazine:

“He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.”

“She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.”

“Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.”

Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hair after a sneeze.”

“The ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.”

Can't you just see these high school guys, so proud of themselves, thinking they really paid tribute to their ladies? Let's just hope they didn't show their words to their girlfriends. Poor guys wouldn't even know what hit them.

He's one romantic devil, isn't he? Just makes you want to run and jump into his arms.

I've seen some almost as good in private-eye stories.

Right, Dick?

They are all a hoot, but the fire hydrant and nose hairs have to take the cake! Great visuals!

Having once been a wiseguy myself, I have a feeling some of the boys knew exactly what they were doing. Like me, they'll outgrow it in time.

It appears that these guys were trying to be unique and creative. Who can deny that they were truly one of a kind? Very funny!!

It reminds me of the old saying that goes something like, "Her teeth were like the stars . . . they come out at night."
