| Opium magazine is running a contest: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]It says on the website: - Quote :
- 500-Word Memoir Contest--this time judged by author and Oscar-nominee Tom Perrotta.
The rules? Easy. Write a memoir that is 500 words or less. The winning story, along with a handful of finalists, will appear in Opium8 which will debut in April 2009. Below, read a shining example--a finalist from Opium5. It's only $10 to enter, so I felt tempted to have a go. Until, that is, I read the "shining example" which shone like matt paint for me. I didn't make it to the end. I read 130 words and then gave up. To check the word count, I went back, copied and pasted into Word and did a word count. 130 words were more than enough for me to feel depressed. Why depressed? This is not the kind of writing to which I aspire. It never willl be. If this is considered a shining example, I wouldn't want to read the stuff they rejected. |

| Shelagh,
What an example of what they're looking for! It sounds a lot like some blogs I've read where the writer is just trying to get a rise out of the reader. Just what we don't need! |
