PostSubject: A new children's book: A Christmas Squirrel   Tue Dec 05, 2017 12:42 pm

Last year, I produced a children's book based on 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore. This year, A Christmas Squirrel, is based on Charles Dickens's much loved A Christmas Carol. The Kindle version is now available.

I find it interesting and coincidental that you used a squirrel as your character.  In my Children’s story, “Santa Boy” I used as squirrel as a companion for Santa Boy.  It led to the song, “Santa Boy” that my  daughter Christine recorded  and is included with the story.
SANTA BOY SONG
(with piano tab)

Santa Boy was born one snowy night,
while the Reindeer and the Elves gazed at the sight.
He had bells on his toes, cute little ways,
and he was to be Santa's helper one day.

Santa Boy got lost and nearly froze,
but was found by the sound of his Jingle Toes.
Santa Boy strayed from his home one day,
when he followed his squirrel to a mountain cave.

A clever little Elf, found him there,
when he was lost in the cold night air.
Santa and his Reindeer heard the Jingling sound,
which they followed until Santa Boy was found.

Santa Boy got lost and nearly froze,
but was found by the sound of his Jingle Toes.
Away with the sleigh and Santa he goes.
You will know him by the sound of his Jingle Toes.

Nice song, Abe. The squirrel was chosen because it rhymes with carol (A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Squirrel). Also, squirrels are hoarders, which fits with Dickens's character, Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who hoarded his money. The squirrel is Sneezer Squooge, which rhymes withh Ebenezer Scrooge. Squooge's partner is Jake Rabbit (Jacob Marlowe) and the three ghosts are: a snowy owl (the ghost of Christmas past), a bat (the ghost of Christmas present) and a raven (the ghost of Christmas future). A wise owl to help Squooge to learn from the past, a blind bat to remind Squooge that he is unaware of his present surroundings, a black raven warning of the future.

I guess we both like squirrels.  They are interesting critters loved by kids and adults alike.

Five star review for the print book:

A delightful and gentle story, beautifully illustrated. I bought this for myself - there are no children here at home - and I know it will be part of my tradition now, as it must be for any person who loves "A Christmas Carol" as well as squirrels. You will easily recognize the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, and you will fall in love with Sam Scratcher, miserly old Squooze's underpaid mouse employee. Treat yourself!
