Winter Solstice Empty
PostSubject: Winter Solstice   Winter Solstice EmptySun Dec 21, 2014 1:27 pm

It's here. The shortest day of the year and the first official day of winter. The Hill Country has been confused. Since our early first freeze, we've been stuck with higher temps, fog and drizzle. I haven't had a Christmas season like this since I left southeast Texas.

How is yout weather so far?

It was cold, but it's mild at the moment. Christmas Day is seldom white; usually mild and wet. The New Year is the opposite: cold, frosty and white over with either snow or frost. What a difference a week makes!

Winter Solstice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Winter Solstice   Winter Solstice EmptySun Dec 21, 2014 5:00 pm

Today was 80 degrees.  I am not complaining much.  It got a bit cloudy this afternoon.
Lettuce is a winter crop.  It is so warm that the lettuces want to bolt.  I have read that to keep them a bit longer, one needs to either dig them up and replant them or (my genius idea) just take a knife and cut around the root ball close to the  lettuce.  We will see how that works.
For the week of Christmas, the on line market is shut down.  I take this opportunity to pick and freeze for our own selves.  Today it was spinach, mustard, turnips and turnip greens.  There is so very much food out there!
I do wish I could teach the world to feed it's own self.

Love, Betty

It was cloudy here and drizzly today,  Last night it was windy and chilly.  We watched The Edge starring Anthony Hopkins-- an old movie, but very good.

Like Betty - hot - hotter than normal.  Grass is drying out early.
