I discuss some of the rejections I've received while researching my books. http://stephenbrayton.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/research-rejection-part-ii/

I used to try and research that way also with little success, especially with anyone in law-enforcement. Later I found the best way was to Google for discussion sites on the subject I was interested in. I bet if you search on line for a discussion site on wholesale slaughtering of pigs you'll probably find some guy or girl who would love to talk the details. I've been on electrical engineering discussion sites to talk turkey with my peers (I'm a nerd engineer) and some outsider would bust in to our discussions to ask a technical question about how much current does it take to kill someone or can someone hang from an energized power line safely. Usually they were writers researching this or that. We always helped him or her out. People will gladly discuss anything about their work as long as you don't invade the sacrosanct temple of their workplace.

Thanks for reading. I've found law enforcement touchy sometimes. I've spoken with the Des Moines Police Department a couple times. The first couple times have been okay. The last couple times have been a no go. I wanted to speak to them about missing persons and another time on narcotics. I didn't get too much help.

I ended up calling my local police department in Oskaloosa regarding the narcotics. I don't know how many times I repeated "I'm an author. I'm writing a story." I wanted to know about heroin. Prices, quantities, etc. I wasn't interested in buying or using, just writing about.

I did the same thing when I called the FBI regarding child pornography. "I'm a writer. I'm a writer. I'm not interested in buying viewing or creating." I didn't want them on my doorstep asking ME a bunch of questions. lol
