On Fading Dreams
Why have you left me, sweet old dreams of youth? I’ve tried so hard to hold them in my heart, Where have they fled, faith, honesty and truth, Or were they only visions from the start?
Do I hear music deep within my soul? Or mocking echoes from a bygone time? The embers grow, though I am growing old, But they grow dark and cold, as does my rhyme.
Each passing moment wears away my hope, As does the wind-swept sand the desert stone; Rich symphonies fading into one note, Leaving me empty, bitter and alone.
I grieve not for my life; I have more sense, I grieve far greater loss — my innocence.

Too sad, but nice.

Whither is fled the visionary gleam? Where is it now, the glory and the dream?
A necessary loss, to be mourned in order to move beyond; then, through the experience of time, regained and fulfilled.

Thank you, friends. Unlike Wordsworth, though, I am forever stuck in second gear, revving on the red line, full of sound and fury, getting nowhere with maximum effort while eagerly awaiting for my engine to blow. There's a modern metaphor tinged with Elizabethan and Romantic allusions from a walking anachronism. Unfortunately, no amount of humor can wipe away the subtext.

Redline - that was the name of my son's band, during the days he thought he might become a rock star. It's a phrase I haven't heard in a while.

OK Ann, I've now posted a grainy and breathy reading of the two poems. If I had any shame left I'd blush. But since it was actually your idea and I am fast becoming shameless, perhaps you can blush for both of us if you listen to these. I should have left well enough alone and not ruined the idea of Russel Crowe, truly one of my favorite actors of all time, reading my words. At least we spared him the embarrassment.
