I had another five star review at Amazon of Mallory Petersen's first mystery, Beta. http://www.amazon.com/Beta-Mallory-Petersen-Mystery-ebook/dp/B005UHEWPC/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1352785212&sr=1-4&keywords=stephen+l+brayton

Congratulations! I am losing reviews as Amazon is taking down reviews by other authors. 'm glad you are gaining some great ones.

DK. Do they give a reason for this?
Must we inform them that authors are also readers?

@Abe
there is a big stink over there (Amazon) about some authors exchanging great reviews with other authors. On one side, I think that taking down the fellow author reviews is a good thing... on the other side, I am a reader and I read loads of the books over there.

Another thing that bothers me about Amazon taking down the reviews by authors is that they are not taking down the paid reviews. IMO those are the ones that should be taken down.

Just a thought,

huggles,
Katja

I've never done an author exchange to provide good reviews. I read a book and review it. Period. Other authors have read my book and reviewed it. Period. They were honest reviews and I resent having them taken down. If they are going to take down some reviews, how about the less than stellar ones? That will help their sales! My average went down because of one less than 4 star review remaining with one less 5 star review.

I could use a couple more reviews to make up for the one they took down - but everyone I know that reviews books is also an author! Everyone is an author today.

I'm curious. How is Amazon determining "author reviews?" Does being an author disqualify one altogether from reviewing a work? How does Amazon determine which readers also write?

As I have heard other authors explain, if you have a book you authored listed on Amazon.com, you are an author.

So, how do they make the connection? One's customer membership is different from one's author registration. Two people often have the same name. There would need to be something to pinpoint the connection.

DK. As you well know, when I review a book I try to give an honest review. Well-known authors have received 3 and 4 start reviews from me. If I give a 5 Star review, it is not based on doing anyone a favor, but is what I personally feel about the book.
Amazon has not cancelled any of my reviews to my knowledge. I will continue to rate and post my reviews. If they choose not to post them, I can't do anything about that, however I would like to be notified.

Hiya All,
I totally agree with DK and Abe.
DK, I just posted what I have read on the forums over there. Hope you did not think that I was doubting any of the reviews that you have on your books - that was not what I was saying Smile I did not pick your reply up that way - just want to make sure.

I have had my Nook and Kindle long before I have published SB, so I have reviewed a few books. Not sure if those were taken down, but I think it is a pretty solid bet that they were.

As I said, authors were exchanging reviews over there and that was what got the ball rolling. I am guessing that there are some out there who are less than honest - and were trading 5-stars for 5-stars.
That got folks on the reader side roused up. The forums over there were fuming for a while, and Amazon listened.

I do think that it makes sense- and there is an undeniable conflict of interest.
Now it is all out in the open and well known that authors cannot review books - at least not on Amazon. Well, technically you still could if you have a second Amazon account- but that would be cheating, right...

Huggles,
Katja

They are already separate accounts, Katja: there are customer accounts and there are author accounts. The email address would often be the same, but they are still two separate entities. I cannot help but think there is more to it than that.

I doubt that anyone is attempting to "cheat," simply because they have both types of account.

Writers have always reviewed books by other writers. It doesn't make sense.
