| On Face book I was surprised to see an old adversary from the PA board minimizing the storm by saying she' been through hurricanes, but what had her worried was if Obama were to win reelection. Amazing perspective! |

| I bet I can, too, Betty. You and I, among others, have been through hurricanes, too, but none like this one. Like Joe, I have family involved, but regardless, it's going to go through some heavily populated places. I'm glad our president is on the job. |

| One of my best friends lives in Yonkers and has a business in New York. She's not worried; but the power off will be a problem. She says it's getting cold and heat may be an issue. We don't have that issue for Florida hurricanes.
I'm glad President Obama is in charge. He has experience and a cool head.

| I am keeping the lights on this night for all those in the path of this terrible storm. In Florida, hurricanes are terrible to behold. In NJ and those northern states, the freezing cold, the water, the rain, the lack of power triplefolds the disaster. At least here in Florida, we are warm. We may sweat with out power, but we do not freeze to death. I worry about all the people in this storms path, and it will reach far inland with tornados and flooding of rivers.
One thing to keep in mind is that the rain does not have to fall on you for the river near you to flood. Water rises and it goes where it will.
I am glad we have a cool head for a president, my self. God bless President Obama.
Love
Betty |

| 10/29/2012 Just talked to my sister-in-law in Staten Island, she said severe wind, rain and flooding, the brunt of the storm hasn't hit yet ! Downtown NYC Wall Street and below flooded 12 feet of water they say just the beginning before the major surge..NYC several transformers have exploded, Con Ed Electric shutting all electrical downtown because of salt water, my niece told me that the pumps in the NYC subways are over 100 years old ! The subway system was built in the late 1880's. Matter of fact everyone should read the great storm of 1888 that hit NYC for four days, major blizzard..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blizzard_of_1888 Cheers..Joe.. |

| Bonita Springs had the 100 year flood about 10 years or so ago - it was called "sheet flow." The water came from all around and flowed into Bonita Springs on a beautiful day and turned the streets into rivers and ruined entire divisions of housing; of course all trailer parks were ruined forever as they were on low land anyway. The very rich developments quickly set up pumps to pump their water out and into the general sheet flow so that even more of the modest housing flooded. They had a few fines to pay which didn't bother them at all. The golf courses did the same. They were happy to pay the fines to save the grass while entire families went homeless as the waters continued to rise with the additional pumping (against the law). It was a nightmare.
One of the hurricanes brought flooding to the same areas again, but not as badly. The same rich developments and golf courses ran their pumps and paid their fines.
I had a flood in my apartment in Key West; the water came up through the grout in the Mexican tiles, shooting into the air like fountains. Then when the street flooded, it came under the door in waves and started climbing up the stairs. It was surreal - like being in a nightmare. All my custom made furniture had twelve inches of water mark and all the metal stuff was rusted. The walls had almost two feet of watermark from the waves. When the water left, it left behind filth and stink unimaginable. All furniture and fixtures were beyond repair.
My friend on the Gulf who had a flood shoveled beach sand out of her house.

| 10/31/2012 Have been trying to reach my sister-in-law in Staten Island, no answer, maybe her power is out ! The subway system is totally devistated, some photos I've seen you can't see the escalators, totally under water ! They say it may take weeks even months to get it back to normal, salt water caroads metal. In all the years growing up in NYC I have never seen so much devistation in my life........... Cheers..Joe... |

| I talked to my friend who lives in Yonkers and has a business in the Bronx. Her power has been out two days, but no damage except trees around. In the Bronx the business has power yet other do not. Busses are running. She has some customers.
She said the people in New York don't know what is going on because they have no power and were unprepared to have hurricane supplies such as portable radios. Thus, all they know about is in their immediate vicinity. Her cell phones were not charged. She fully believed Yonkers would be fine as this was a coastal event.
Even if they have cell phones, many are not working or have no place to charge. |
