"If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It's very important to be aware of them every time they come up."

Teilhard de Chardin:
" If, as the result of some interior revolution, I were to lose in succession my faith in Christ, my faith in a personal God, and my faith in spirit, I feel that I should continue to believe invincibly in the world. The world (its value, its infallibility and its goodness) that, which when all is said and one, is the first, the last, the only thing in which I believe. It is by this faith that I live. And it is to this faith, I feel, that at the moment of death, rising above all doubts, I shall surrender myself. "

"Statistically, at every degree of evolution, we find evil always and everywhere. This is relentlessly imposed by the play of large numbers at the heart of a multitude undergoing organization. The human epic resembles nothing so much as a way of the cross."

In a word: the first work of the hero is to retreat from the world scene of secondary effects to those causal zones of the psyche where the difficulties really reside, and there to clarify the difficulties, eradicate them in his own case (i.e., give battle to the nursery demons of his local culture) and break through to the undistorted, direct experience and assimilation of what C. G. Jung has called “the archetypal images."

It is inevitable that children should be taught in purely concrete terms. But then the child grows up and realizes who Santa Claus is. He is really Daddy. So, too, we must grow in the same way in learning about God, and the institutional churches must grow in presenting the message of the symbols to adults.

PostSubject: Re: Quotable Quotes   Quotable Quotes - Page 4 EmptyFri May 17, 2013 5:31 pm

Oh, Anne, This may be one instance that I disagree with JC. As a child, I heard about Santa but he was a fictional person much as Babe The Blue Ox, and other characters in the books I could read. I could believe in the trolls under the bridge as much as I could believe in Santa.

Funny thing is that I can still believe in Santa and the trolls and other characters of childhood fiction....But now I know that the figments of imagination that concocted those characters saw far beyond most peoples vision. It is the truth in the tales that keep them fresh and passed from generation to generation.

Love,

Betty

Quotable Quotes - Page 4 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Quotable Quotes   Quotable Quotes - Page 4 EmptyFri May 17, 2013 6:04 pm

I don't know that you disagree altogether, Betty. I think he is using Santa as a metaphor for a fundamentalist religious perspective, that, in order to understand the symbolic meanings in the religious stories, that we have to go beyond the literal interpretation.

Maybe he was stretching a point, and Santa got demoted in the process. Maybe he should have found a different metaphor.

I love every word of Wooffer's Tales, and I believe in the Truth of them, even though I know that animals don't literally verbalize in English. It doesn't lessen the Truth of their messages - not one whit. And we can always believe in the spirit of Santa Clause, even if he worked through our "daddies."

My focus in the quotation had to do with the conclusion: So, too, we must grow in the same way in learning about God, and the institutional churches must grow in presenting the message of the symbols to adults.

That's the wonderful thing about your stories. We, as adults, can read them with a child's innocent heart, and keep the messages intact, without having to believe that dogs and peacocks can literally speak.

So, too, we ought to be able to believe that a man (or woman) who is struggling with a changing world, and not able to quite believe in the reality of it, can be like a person stuck in the "belly of a whale," and that God can help him by having him "spit onto the shores" of that new world, by telling us a child-like story of a man who was swallowed by a big fish, and spit out onto the shore of a land he thought he wanted no part of, so that he would have to face his denials and prejudices.

But that's just my interpretation.

Hope you will forgive JC in this instance.

Annie

I love Santa and wish I had believed in him. Mom did not like him. I had a
Santa doll which I cherished. My cousin had pneumonia and Mom talked me into giving the doll to him. She did not replace the toy. I have Santa dolls now. Quotable Quotes - Page 4 356119

You know, Ann, those voices do cry out and tell you that no-one cares about your story, that it is the same story told by thousands of people in a million different words to a readership of endless nobodies.

To write all that "trash" that is your history means nothing to anyone and only stirs up your troubled mind. Better let that stuff rest. Concentrate on the beauty of this world. My opinion.

Love,

Betty
