| I have to disagree about the ISBN. It's important in the long run. Amazon does sell Lulu books directly because Lulu uses its printing facility. |

| Every writers clique and club in the country, in the world, enthusiastically puts out their own anthology. It's hardly a unique literary event, and is important only to the participants and extended families. Anthologies might as well be one hundred percent poetry, because like poetry, there is no market, only audiences. That condition makes a good case for not investing in an ISBN. However, without an ISBN, the book will never be available outside the authors' personal distribution plans. It will not be available, even on a special order basis from any of the on-line or brick-and-mortar stores. Libraries will shun it, but in reality likely will not even know of its existance without the ISBN. Distribution after friends and family receive their gift copies will be reduced to leaving copies behind in Doctors' waiting rooms and hotel lobbies, with the hope that someone will take it home as they do the outdated magazines. The ISBN decision comes down to recognizing the bitter truth of anthology distribution and the hope that ours becomes the breakout volume that beats the odds. | I'll say it again. I will be buying an ISBN. The main reason for buying an ISBN was because I wanted to add the book to mobipocket at a later date. It's a very time-consuming activity and I'm so disappointed and worn doen by the comments about "profits" and "marketing" that I'm losing interest in the project. However, I started so I'll finish.
This morning I spent four hours solid on the computer and produced eight pdf files and sent them out. I received corrections back. Made the corrections. Sent out new pdf files. I have sent out twenty-one of fifty-six pdf files and I'm sick of the sight of them.
The thought of doing even more work to produce e-books in html code for mobipocket and kindle is not at the top of my list of things to do.
I'm not going to let anyone down or pay less attention to detail than I have done from the onset but I'm not trying to rip of the contributors either. I'm working my butt off here and being made to feel that I'm turning into Bill Gates. Give me a break. |

| Don is posting as I type, and I agree with everything he has said. Below is my original post. You are doing a fantastic job, Shelagh. I am in awe of the monumental job you have done and continue to do.
IMHO, if there are any profits (which I doubt, after you take out your costs) they will probably be miniscule! I don't wish to focus on that. It's just not worth it.
I simply look forward to seeing the Anthology in print, being able to order some and give as gifts that will span the years, unlike many other items.
As I see it, this anthology is a special gift you are giving to the rest of us. We should be offering asistance where possible, not quibbling about anything. |

| Don and Zada,
I knew exactly the way you both felt before you posted a single word. Don's story was the first I received and is the first in the anthology. If I could have put yours second Zada, I would have done but it's in a diiferent section. The thing is, I know you don't mind as long as it's in there.
I avoided all mention of money from the anthology because to say: "if the book does well then this is what I intend to do" seemed too presumptious and assumed we would make some money. I thought I was among friends who trusted me and knew I would always do the right thing. At the end of the day, I thought I would be able to turn to everyone and say, "Isn't that what friends are for?"
I do feel let down.

| I would like to say to anyone, who might feel miffed, that Amazon do not pay anything to mobipocket creators until their account reaches $150. If the account never reaches that amount, the creators don't receive anything. If I followed their lead then contributors would only receive a share of the profits when the amount raised reached $150 x 46 = $6,900.
If the profit from the sale of each book was $1, we would need to sell 6,900 books.
If the profit was $2, we would need to sell 3,450 books.
If the profit was $3, we would need to sell 2,300 books.
If the profit was $4, we would need to sell 1,725 books.
You can refer back to these figures in the months to come when you know how many books have been sold and work out just how much money is owing to you. |

| Shelagh, please don't feel let down. Only a few were expecting a lot but doing little and you always have those types around. The only anthologies I know of that pay writers a little money are those published by Mystery Writers of America and Private Ete Writers of America. I am sure other major organizations also do this. However, an MWA or PWA anthology has a huge built-in market. They pay writers up front, but only about half of what they could get selling the story to a magazine. No one submits stories for the money, only for the pleasure of doing so, of supporting their organization and of the exposure that results. This anthology is similar, but with stories and poems by writers that for the most part are not widely known. Anyone who believes it will put money in their pocket is naive in the extreme. Don and Zada said it beautifully, Shelagh. You have taken on a monumental task and done it with skill and care. Remember that for every malcontent you have a dozen admirers who appreciate your efforts. Don't let the few destroy your joy. They aren't worth it. Your own worth is priceless. |

| It is amazing how we can be doing something brilliant and folks will complain - I have to say though that I am still glad to be a part of this project, and that I love seeing all of the positive aspects of it. For my part, I approached the anthology as something fun and a reason to get Maggie Bendar out of the closet once again, and I am really glad I did! This is a worthy project. I think as a group instead of grumping, we ought to be figuring out a way to properly thank Shelagh for all her efforts -- just as soon as you can poke your head out from the stack of PDF's! |

| I have to agree with Pam. I'm so happy to be a part of this, and I've trusted in Shelagh to do the wonderful job that she always does in every way. And I don't have to think about it. I know it'll be great, and I'm excited to see it.
I'm so sorry that Shelagh has to feel anything but elation and complete satisfaction for a job very well done! Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your hard work, Shelagh. I just want you to know that I appreciate all you're doing for all of us. |

| Trying to help can often be misconstrued as trying to hurt, and that is sad. Good intentions often get a bum rap. I personally appreciate and applaud the work that Shelagh has done and continues to do. |

| JEZZ, you guys are making me sound like the wicked witch of the west.
I sent my submissions in as soon as I heard about the anthology, not to make money but to be part of something special.
I mentioned the lulu situation, not as a demand, but as an option and I wish I hadn't bothered. If one can't post an opinion on this board without being slated. Best not to post at all.
Shelagh. I'm looking foward to reading the finished project, and I thank you for all your hard work.
See you around. |

| Sorry I've been away and not gotten in on this earlier. Shelagh, I just want to tell you how very much I appreciate all your hard work and your friendship. I know this will be a beautiful book that I'm looking forward to owning and giving as gifts, and delighted to have my poems included. God bless you for doing this!
I totally trust you to do it the way you think best and hope it will do well enough that you will at least recover your costs but even better if you can make a profit.
We will all profit from the exposure. The books I give to others here in North Carolina and other areas will see works from all of you in different locations that possibly would never read your writing otherwise, and I'm aware that what I've written will reach people that I never would have access to otherwise.
Thank you Shelagh! Connie |

| Thanks everyone for your support! Don't feel too bad Karina, your suggestion not to buy an ISBN was a good one and worthy of consideration. I will be buying a distribution package including an ISBN so that books can be placed in libraries and if I remain in a positive frame of mind, I'll add the book to mobipocket and kindle. But first, the book needs to be published!
Yesterday was the last day for submissions and I won't be accepting any new contributions.
The target for the anthology was 100,000 words and fifty contributors. The anthology has 93,655 words and 292 pages contributed by 46 members of the network and forum.
I have sent out more than half of the pdf files but it is taking longer than expected. If you haven't already received a pdf file from me, you should receive something within the next two weeks.
When all the contents of the book have finally been approved by all the contributors and I have written the back cover blurb, the book will be sent to the printers. We are only weeks away!
Exciting times! |

| Hi, I know how busy you must be with this enormous project (& thank you for all of your hard work) - Are you using all of the submissions made? If not, is there a master list of final contributors? (I wanted to know if my story would be in it or not) I am looking forward to the finished project. and again, thank you for all of your hard work Shelagh. |
