Definitely a better mount for an overly-judgmental law-and-order fanatic, don't you think?

I think that horse is embarassed about the hat. What kind of hat is that for a person riding a horse of that caliber. I can see it in that horses eye. He would like to say " stuff the hat."

Well, it looks like the horse left him, Betty, but at least he got a better hat:

So, There I was, thinking about Odes. Odes like Shakespeare wrote, like Keats wrote. My character, Fannie does not know that what she sings to the trees and critters are really odes, but she is a singer of odes, none the less. Everyone in the swamp looks forward to her walking their way and verbalilzing a poem in their direction. It has set the trees and the vines all a twitter.
I am a mess and I know it.

Messes are good things. I am about to go fix a mess of collard greens to mix with some sauteed sausage and brown rice - and idea I got from another blog, a recipe blog called Healthy-Delicious:
http://healthy-delicious.com/2012/04/baked-risotto-with-sausage-and-kale/

Betty, you have such great ideas for canning and freezing your produce, you could start a recipe blog, too - or just include it with this one.

So, There I was with my great grandson looking for baby cows along the dirt road off into Lester's Field. They were there, but so far away that an up close and personal encounter was not possible. We went on down the road and looked over the bridge into the water of the Little Manatee, (south fork) where we saw much trash that had been dumped into the water. We identified it as a large garbage bag, two truck wheels and an engine from something. Also, there was a small turtle who did not seem to mind the garbage.
Years ago, when his mother was his age, and the rest of my grands came to stay here, that water was full of critters. We fished there, caught bass on white plastic shrimp, stump knockers and blue gill. I believe that I need to complain to the county who maintains that waterway for having let it go so far into squallor. I am a hot head , you all must know that by now.
That is the bridge that Ho Chi had gone to in search of milk and honey. She found water, then, and that was what she should have found. Not garbage and rotting litter. I am ashamed of humanity.

Betty

Ahhh.

This night, hours and days, weeks and months have passed since the post above. Time. Time is so fragile. Moments. Strung out. Months and years.

I wish I could change the flipping by of time. I have no control.

Time is so slient. I have read that time is really not relevant. I believe that to be true. It is a wonder that we can concieve of our existance at all. I wonder if we are really here.

Human pigs are everywhere. Our future is what we make it and it doesn't look good. About all we can do is set an example and hope others will follow. Trash kills. Your stories with animal characters and how they are affected by the environment is a great way to get the message across. Keep writing, Betty.

So, There I Was ...

Listening to the doctor say I could Hoover the house if I used my left arm, and for anything else, if it hurt do not do it. I can drive.

Well, Then!

Driving is freedom! I wish I had a lot of money. I would shop my heart out. I am close to out of my mortal mind, but give me a week to adjust. I need physical stength.

Ah, that is why I like Big Lots, Dollar Tree and as a last resort, WalMart.

The Dollar Store is my casino. I go to see what value I can get from no more than $10 and shop each row before making any decisions then return to collect my bounty.

Big Lots has BOOKS. LOTS OF BOOKS. They are remainders from name authors in beautiful hardbacks from $.50 to $3.00. I also stalk Big Lots like the Dollar Tree, allowing myself to spend no more than $10.00 .

WalMart has their Clearance rows (about three rows) that I roam through in detail and might not buy a thing.

Target is another. I first do a perimeter walk then an "end cap stalk." Target puts their clearance merchandise on the end caps and keep reducing the prices until they are gone. I picked up a super grand Hamilton ice cream maker with two bowls for $8.00 - originally $29.99 - It was bright pink - but who cares? It met my budget and makes great ice cream in six minutes.

Thus, for no more than $10 or $20 at the most, I come home with lots of goodies that I need and can use - not junk - and have a fun day shopping.

Oh - one more. Jo Ann's, Michaels and others have beading sections where they put lovely things on sale, often pretty pendants, etc. I can spend a lot of time at one of their sales. Recently I came away with two glass pendants at $1.00 each.

Oh, Diane,

I can see those pendants im my mind's eye. How lovely they are! I see your smile, tool I love that stuff.

When I think back to the old five and dime and those little brass pencil sharpeners in the shapes of locomotives, stagecoaches, little dolls, .....how my eyes lit! How I coveted those little things! I stole a 'diamond ear-ring set that was in a chandelier shape. How they sparkled! My mother threw them in the trash and called me a whore. I was 8 years old.

I am hooked on gewgaws. If you go to the Goodwill, they have the case with with jewels right there in front of the check out stand. I have to laugh. It took me many years to ask how much those lovlies were. They are between 1.99 and 6.99. So, I have this jewel box that I fill with those fancy things. Not worth much, but so lovely and pretty to look at. Little sparkles of life.

Jewels like you, my friend. I wish one could store up their good friends in a little jar and take them out when they needed. Demented thought, I know.

Betty

To be or not to be....

This morning I got up and looked all around my house, felt the pain in my side and back, sat down on the couch, turned on the news, drank a cup of coffee, took all my pills.

I considered my options. I could sit on the couch with the heating pad and the pillows propping me up and watch Nature or Ken Burns specials (which I love) or I could do something (anything)

I thought about how my floors had not been cleaned in 37 days. I thought about my dogs and all the hair they have put down (after David gave them a bath) that was collected willy-nilly in every corner and crevace.

I said, "Be brave" and decided to clean the office. I dusted the books, the blinds, and put all the trash in the trash. I cleaned the desk. WhaHooooo! Out I come with the vaccumn. Snort! It can run it's own self! Floor-mate, here I come. Only a little harder than the vac. Washed the rug.

The Office is clean.

Off I go to the bathrooms. No problems!

Next the master bedroom.

Dog beds are in the master. Lots of hair, HAIR, Hair!!! Clean at last!

In the end, I have the livingroom, the kitchen and the laundry and porch to do tomorrow.

I was so glad to do. I was so glad that I could! I was so glad to be over the idea that I could not.

Love,

Betty

So There I Was . . .

Thinking about our Sara who has a failing liver, failing kidneys, a failed thyroid gland and now a non-functioning adrenal gland. I am amazed that she is still living and seems to be happy and not miserable. What amazes me is the endurance of dogs or cats without complaint. She has lost big clumps of hair but she is not bothered. I have made her a kind of wardrobe of shirts to wear to cover her back and prevent sunburn and mosquito bites.

Tonight, with all the meds, she is resting easy and breathing well. I find that I love a dog with or without hair. I suppose that is true love. Smile She has no vanity.

When I think about my wrinkles and sags and bags and my public image and how I would face the world without hair, I think my dog has a secret to share with all of us humans. She loves from the inside out. That is the secret to love, I think.

Love,

Betty

So, There I Was . . .

Thinking about the value of a dollar. . . how it has changed in my lifetime from a third of a man's daily salary to something almost without worth. I can remember when a person earned 3.00 a day for a full day's hard and sweaty labor. I remember my first job making .25 cents per hour. That was way back in the end of the '40's and early '50's.

In the early 1960's my husband earned 300.00 per month as an officer in the Valley National Bank, Kingman, Arizona. I worked for the newspaper and made 100.00 per month, 30.00 a week before taxes, as a clerk and the official obituary writer. High wages for a woman, then. I think it was .75 cents an hour before taxes...40 hours a week.

In my life, there were times that 6 pop bottles returned for the deposit bought me gas to get to work and back.

Now, a dollar does not buy much. It will buy one of my Kindle books, however. A cheap price for someone's words.

I noticed yesterday, that someone had bought "A Christmas Under The Old Oak Tree, for .99 cents. I was elated because that is the way I am. Proud that someone I did not know paid that little .99 cents for one of my books.

This day, I noticed that the same person who spent the .99 cents to read that story had returned it. The story is only 7 pages. It states on Amazon how many pages it is before someone puts out their hard earned .99 cents.

I was astounded! There must be people in this world who will cheat you out of .35 given the chance.

Love,

Betty

Yeah. I looked for the weekly coupon in section B of the Sunday paper (a weekly $2 off for my local grocery). I realized that someone had pulled all the section B's. Were they desperate or clever? I don't know. But I had a good use for that coupon - this week it was for produce. I joke that I pay for my Sunday paper with the $2.00 grocery coupon - not exactly a joke anymore.
