I have two. They have similar names, but very different stories: "Snow White," and "Snow White and Rose Red."

Everybody probably knows Snow White. I think I posted the plot for the other somewhere. I remember Dick commenting on it. Basically, Snow and Red are sisters who live with their mother in a little house in the woods. They are both good girls who love their mother dearly, but maybe Snow White is the better of the two, because her favorite thing to do is sit by her mother and sew, while Red likes to run in the meadow and gather wildflowers. Eventually, of couse, there is a prince who has been put under a spell and the girls save him.' He marries Snow and Red has to settle for his younger brother. The disguised message, when you read it as an adult, is that if you want to get the best husband, you should stay at home and sew and let him come to you instead of going outside and running around. I grew up being a Snow White, but when that didn't work out as it was supposed to, I decided it was time to gather a few wildflowers. Ann Ann

Cinderella. I still love it, and it was my favorite as a child.

Uncle Wiggily. I still have one of the books. Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy. I haven't thought of her in a long time.

I've read "Snow White & Rose Red". I seem to remember the prince was under a spell and appeared as a bear and the girls and their mother were hospitable to him while he was in bear form. Of course I love fairy tales! My favorite when I was a little girl was "The Snow Queen". Now my favorite, of course, is my "Dreamer's Forest" series. |

Dear Alice. My David has never read a fairy tale. I wonder if boys have missed that wonder. He tells me he has never heard of Hansel or Gretel, not the Billy Goats Gruff, or even Pecos Bill. Fairy Tales were the literature of my childhood. I can see the big print and the pictures in my mind's eye this night. I learned to read with those stories. I learned to dream out of my misery with those stories. Under the covers in the dark with a flash light. Sitting at the table with the kerosene lamp. Reading, reading, reading, nose two inches from the book, blind as a bat. Still am. Now, I can't hear. Where is the justice in that. David cannot understand my lack of hearing. I do not understand his not understanding. Hearing aids are 3 grand. Anyone have a used one? My favorite fairy tale from the old Grimm stuff is the one where the fisherman catches the magic fish, has the kindness to let him go and gets wishes. I have loved animal stories because I can see the animals in my day life. The Toad in Wind Of The Willows, the rabbit, Hazel, in Watership Down. I wish that I could write like that. Love, Betty

I actually downloaded some fairy tale books free from Google ebookstore. I always thought fairy tales were a little grim and did scare some children into falso beliefs - like the wicked stepmother in my Cinderella or the wicked witch in Hansel and Gretal and others.

JoElle, Of course you had better like fairy tales. Betty, I am so sorry about your eyesight and hearing loss. Life is so unfair. DK, I know what you mean.

When we were children, my brothers and sisters and I had these books (they are out of print now): They were wonderful books. And they were beautifully illustrated. Thanks to eBay I was able to get sets for my grandchildren and nieces. A couple of Christmases ago, my son bought me a gorgeous copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales collection. I immediately read 'Cinderella' and ... ... it sure wasn't the version I'd heard as a kid. But I do love Grimm ... sort of Poe meets Disney.

Google ebookstore has all versions of fairy tales as free ebooks. Not the same as holding the books; but still great to read and enjoy the illustration.
