| I want to live with health and vitality for as long as appropriate. I fear the unknown and don't look forward. I am afraid that death is like going to sleep. Nothing. Since we are just another mammal that shows every day how little we use the brains and compassion available to us, our destiny is likely the same as all mammals. Even if we have that mysterious "soul," its destiny after death is unknown.
I can remember times when I felt that the moment I was in was sufficient; that death could follow and my life would be complete. There are so many different spiritual and religious interpretations of death that it's really confusing. It must be comforting to those who have profound beliefs that they have the definitive answers to life and death.

| DK, Thanks for your brave, honest answer to a difficult question. I started thinking about this yesterday as I attended a beautiful memorial for a very dear friend. It woudn't be easy to, "live to be the last leaf on the tree." Unfortunately she was the first of our group to go. We all share the hope of a resurrection. |

Alice...
To answer your question, I read a book once titled: " Life After Death," it was about the near death experience, In reading that book it takes away all the fear. I read once the Christian Science By Mary Baker Eddy, they believe life is a dream and when you die you go from one dream to the other, to me there's more dangers in life than in death...Oh yes I only want to be 85 , any older then they throw you in a nursing home, I don't know anyone who wants that !
Cheers..Joe |

All written by people who haven't died yet. Al, I quite agree. Until someone dies and comes back to report on it, it is belief and conjecture. By the same token, if someone truly died and came back with a report, would we believe them? How could they prove the experience? I guess we'll have to find it out firsthand. In the meanwhile, I want to live as long as I'm healthy. Don't want to become a breathing organism that needs to be fed and clothed. |

| There is no good time to die. We die when we cannot breathe or when our heart does not beat. Until then, we live and hold on to every breath and every heart beat as the gift from God that they are. Life is the prize. We should never forget that. Love, Betty |

| As long as I have my marbles and ability to care for myself, I'm good. After that, forget it. No point in running up medical bills to be miserable. |

| What if the mind is functioning but the body is not? What if the mind is functioning but you cannot communicate that function to anyone? Is a mind worth keeping alive?
This question is tied to a distant future when everything is electronic with bionic body parts, implants, etc.; perhaps the choice to clone oneself, etc. It is conceivable that the body would atrophy to a minimal level to simply support the brain function. |

| Ah! Hope comes into the miserable picture! It not so easy to give up hope and even less easy to decide it is time to die. Hope is what living is based upon. All human life is tempered by hope. I wonder about the animals whom we humans have decided do not know the concept of hope and are merely bestowed with the instinct for survival. My personal dogs know about hope. Perhaps they are unique. The squirrels in my trees know about hope, but perhaps it is just those that live here. It is my very humble opinion that all creatures have hope. God bless hope. Love, Betty |

Which wouldn't help over-crowding on the planet any. The current riots in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere are probably partly rooted in their exploding populations all competing for scarce resources. |

| More seriously, I decided when I was 7 I'd live to 107 so I can see the tricentennial of our country. |

| Dear LC, This is not a discussion about who gets to live, but how long you would want to. Me, I like living and I would prefer living in any god awful condition compared to death. I would have hope for a better tomorrow. Love, Betty |

| Betty, I have listened to several discussions about domestic dogs that were founded on pretty sound research. The belief is that the long-term domestication of dogs has resulted in some breeds having evolved to exhibit or mimic human emotions. |

| It's not how long I wish to live ... but that I actually LIVE!
It's not death we should fear, but a life unlived. |

| JoElle, I agree. Enjoy the present. As DK says in her signature, "All I know is this moment". We don't know what comes after, and waiting for streets of gold or listening to harp music may become boring or not exist.
The other side of the fence seems greener to many. Often an illusion. |
