"Please know that if we are interested in your work, you will hear from us within 3-6 weeks, and if you do not hear from us within 3-6 weeks, then you should feel free to submit your work to another agency."

I found that text in the lising of an agent on the AAR website. It is about getting a response to a query. The implication is that you may not query other agents while you are waiting for this one to respond or time out.

Given the number of agents to query, and given that most of them will decline to represent the book, and given that they all say they need weeks to months to respond, do you think you'll live long enough to sell your book?

From another agent on the same list:

"Please do not send an exclusive query. Queries are meant to be shared with multiple agents."

Now that's more like it.

In general I've found that you can query multiple agents. Some ask that inform them if you are doing so. I wouldn't agree to an exclusive for an agent on just a query.

Now if the agent wanted an exclusive on a partial or full, that's a different story.

In 2006, I didn't think I'd live long enough --- but here I am!

One thing I'm learning as I pound away at the Internet reading agents' websites: The industry is dominated by women. Agents and authors.

Al,
I think it's best to just ignore those comments. I also think it wise to submit to submit multiple queries. If anyone responds and shows an interest, it gives an opportunity to inform the other Agents you queried that you have received a response of interest and therefore you may have to withdraw your query. It may prompt the Agent to take a serious look at what you sent to them. And if they are interested, they can then compete for your work.

I personally would not wait to hear from one Agent before submitting to another. If they want exclusivity, then they should respond in a timely manner. Waiting 3 - 6 weeks is not timely and there is no assurance that you will get a response.

I did get one response that acknowledged receipt of my query and gave me a date by which they would respond positive or negative. I was impressed with their professionalism.

Yes, and probably a consequence of the fact that most men don't read much.

We read bumper stickers, beer labels, and Hooters ads.

I got an automated response from Medaillion Press this morning:

"Please allow 6-8 months for a response to your
submission."

Add "payment instructions on internet porn sites," and I'll agree that most men probably don't read much more than that.
