Hi,

When I started out in the book business I was 29 and only had my autobiography (I'm bipolar) written. I only tried one agent and he nearly took me on, then didn't because he didn't think I would go on to have a writing career. Well my publisher has stuck by me, I'm now the author of five books and have at least two more in the pipeline.

What kills me is all these celebs that go on tv and have a best seller. Half of them haven't even written their own book(s) and the rest are heavily edited. Whereas little plebs like myself have no way of spreading the word about our books into which we've poured our heart, soul and time. Or at least, No way I know of.

This has got me thinking if I should go back to that agent and say, "Look, 5 books, more in pipline, need agent to help with publicity." What is your opinion?

KSx

P.S. I like the agent who initially turned me down, he was very nice about it all.

Hi Katy-Sara,

I checked out your website and followed the link to how to buy one of your books. Then I googled your publisher and visited the website.

Your non-fiction books are in a niche market. Sufferers of the illnesses you cover in your books, and close members of their family, will be interested in reading the books. Clinicians and students will also be interested. The general public will not. If you aim to target the textbook-buying market, you do not need an agent to place your books with textbook publishers. They welcome proposals for books without having to go through an agent. You can download a proposal form to submit to Elsevier Health here:

http://www.elsevierhealth.co.uk/uk/article.jsp?sgCountry=GB&pageid=5219

Many publishers recommend that fiction writers should acquire an agent, and many publishers do not accept submissions that do not go through an agent. You can find information about agents/publishers in the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook:

http://www.writersandartists.co.uk/

I have no problem finding a publisher - my next book will probably be my biggest and they already want it. Problem is I get a very poor deal. I also get no help in publicising it. Although my publisher is a mental health publisher he is happy to also publish my fiction - which makes me wonder what he is getting out of the deal.

Since I am also now writing fiction as well are you saying I SHOULD get an agent? Sorry I am a little confused by your answer. Anybody could be interested in murder mystery type books. The agent I contacted before was interested in me even when I had only written my autobiography. (Niche market definitely).

If you get a very poor deal, then I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Does your fiction book appear in bookstores? If not, you should look around for another publisher.

No it's only available online in places like Amazon. I feel a responsibility towards my publisher because he has always stuck by me... but you are right I should look elsewhere - I thought that might be easier with an agent.

Did you check out the Elsevier Health website? This is from their About page:

"Elsevier has become the undisputed market leader in the publication and dissemination of literature covering the broad spectrum of scientific endeavors.

The Health Sciences division publishes over 700 journals and 2,000 books and clinical reference works annually and offers an extensive portfolio of online tools in education, practitioner reference and point of care.

The worlds premier names in health care publishing - Saunders, Mosby, and Churchill Livingstone are all members of the Elsevier team of leading publishers dedicated to meeting the information needs of health science professionals. For over 125 years, the Elsevier name has represented a dedication to excellence in the exchange of information."

Many publishers of fiction do not accept unsolicited manuscripts and recommend that authors should find an agent. Be warned: it is as difficult to find an agent as it is to find a publisher.

The confusion arises from the fact that you need an agent for works of fiction but not for non-fiction. If you signed with an agent, you would not receive any help with publicity for your non-fiction books.

There is a disconnect between what kind of book you think you have, what you think your publisher should do, and what its mandate is.

First, as Shelagh noted, you do not have a book of wide commercial interest. There is no comparison to it and to celeb bios. People are interested in the lives of celebs. They're not interested, for the most part, in the lives of each other. If you think this is unfair, become a celeb. Problem fixed.

Re your publisher not marketing your work. I checked out its site. It is clearly not a traditional publisher. It is more of a "social justice" enterprise to give mentally ill people a voice. From their site:

<< How does Chipmunkapublishing have a unique business model ?
Well lots of reasons we think. Firstly there are very few mental health specialist publishers around. It is not a trendy subject and not really seen as a commerical one. >>

Its editors are volunteers, and edit for spelling and grammar only. They expect the author to market the book. If the book does well, they ask you to request royalties in the form of free books or, if you're on benefits, to donate the royalties back to them.

Like you, I'm puzzled by their acceptance of a murder mystery. Guess they're trying to branch out with more titles, hoping the authors will sell them themselves, keeping their business sustainable.

If you want a book that will be marketed to the general public and will hopefully earn good royalties, you need to have a subject that will appeal to the general public and find a traditional publisher.

BTW, agents don't publicize or market books. They sell them to publishers.

The first remark re famous people was just a pissed off feeling I get when celebs bring out autobiographies (not all celebs, some actually write brillant pieces like Stephen Fry). But some get offered 2 million up front then get loads of publicity. My autobiography could help so many people but they just don't know it exists.

I also accept that my 4 mental health books do not suit the wider audience - but that is not true of my murder/thriller. For that there is surely a wider audience. I am going to look at publicity firms. Not bothering with an agent.

Shelagh, thanks for that. I will approach them with my next book. ~Unfortunately my contract says I have to give my current publisher first refusal, if he matches any other offer.

Unless you do lecture tours or public speaking events, a publicist is not a good idea. You will find hundreds of websites offering to promote your book and, unfortunately, many hopeful authors employ them and end up out of pocket. If your royalties are small, then paying a fee to increase the royalties by fifty per cent or less is going to cost more than you gain.

Even if you double or treble your small royalties, if it costs more to produce those sales, you lose. You have to look at the cost of hiring a publicist, then work out how many books you need to sell to recover the extra expense of promoting your books.

I'm more bothered about increasing sales than I am about the money. Money really is of no interest to me. I know all authors probably think this, but I think if my fiction book got some attention it could spread.

As for the public speaking, well I am an academic, it is something I do well. I would look out for a publicist that offered this.

I have to say, thank you for all this advice since I only joined your site a few days ago. I do appreciate it.

Hi KatySara,

Most authors setting out want to see their books in readers hands more than they want to increase their bank balance (apart from LC who is motivated by money and would not be interested in writing anything that did not generate at least a small income). Most of us, however, wrote books not simply for our own pleasure but to entertain readers.

Fiction writers only make reasonable sales through commercial publishers, who have a juggernaut of advertising/marketing/promotion already set up. These publishers minimise the risks and only sign up authors with books that fit onto their list.

Small publishers make money by employing few staff, do no advertising and very little marketing, and rely on their authors to do all the promotion.

When I mentioned public speaking, I meant those with a full-diary of events (libraries, conference centres, guest-speaker events, schools, colleges and universities) that they will be attending on a regular, yearly basis. Places where they can promote and sell their books across the country (not locally).

Well then this is me, with a fiction book that could suit a wide audience, what else can i do than employ a publicist? I've got my website set up and a loyal bunch or dare I call them fans, but I need to spread wider.

You need a commercial publisher. There really is no other way. You can check out this website (I receive the occasional newsletter but I don't use their services -- it's just good to know what's on offer out there):

Shelagh, I think you should join Author's Guild. Since you publish, you can write your own contract to show a "substantial" advance paid to you for your books. I don't know the definition of "substantial" but DT may since he is a member.

Hi DK,

I checked and I'm not eligible. The publisher has to be American and my company is based in South Wales.

Hi Katy-Sara,

I've only just caught up with this thread and it sounds like you've been getting a lot of help.

There are so many here willing to share what they've learned.

Best wishes to you.
