| I want to give visibility to an online glowing review of my YA novel, "Colt O'Brien Sees the Light". I have a link on my web site. What else can I do to promote it? |

| Well, obviously you're doing one thing, posting here. And should do much more of it. Spreading the news far and yon on forums, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
You might even consider a bunch of press releases.
Huge list of release sites HERE and a bunch of links to all sorts of promotional sites. |

| Also, consider putting your website link in your "signature". |

| Thanks Lin I have updated my signature. I have been considering press releases but want to get more educated. Have you had success with that? Have you written any? |

| I've written a ton and learned one main thing: the papers don't give a hoot about your book unless you are famous with a couple major exceptions: Have book signings at some cool place, and tie in the book review and the papers will print it, especially the local throw-away, free ones. Give some books away at a charity event and tie that into the review with the press release with all the details.
Then, you can do a typical release: Who, What, When, Where.
Author xyz is signing his famous novel abc at Sammy's Pool Supplies Saturday, November 3, at 10:00 a.m.. Midwest Book Reviews praised (novel name) "..................." Light refreshments will be served and a drawing will be held on site for a free copy of (book name). Books are also available at:...Call xxx for further information.
The Novel xyz, recently praised by xyz reviews "........" is authored by our own abc. Meet abc at the xyz charity event Friday November 10 - a lucky winner will receive a signed copy. All other signed copies sold will benefit xyz charity. Books are also available at...Call xxx for further information.
Anyway, that's a rough idea of some press release stuff that tends to get printed locally.
I'm assuming you know to use letterhead and the top of the release reads:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: Contact:
They are usually double-spaced. You may attach a book cover jpg and and author picture jpg.
There are many other ideas, too; this is just a quick jot on a hot summer night. Good luck. |

| Good points, Lin and DK. Social networking sites are really good places to mention reviews as is one's blog(s).
Most people suggest that when it comes to news releases, the most important thing (if you're not famous) is putting something there that tells the editor (or webmaster) what's in it for his or her readers.
Okay, YOUR book got a good review. (Congratulations, by the way.) When MY books get good reviews, I want to talk about it, too. But how what does a good review of YOUR book or MY book mean to the people who are going to be reading the news story if the news release is published?
We need to find ways to say that these reviews show that our books are bringing the readers what THEY want...supposedly, a fun/exciting/sexy/thrilling book to read. We need to find what the reader cares about and go after that.

| It's hard to judge success from releases on these sites. It's kind of like a radio broadcast. Might turn up on a google search. Wide bore shotgun.
Think keywords.
DK has a pretty good model there. Include a blurb from the review.
My strongest faith is in forums like this one, and the groups on LinkedIn. Also Ning groups, but after Jul 1 lots of them are going to vanish.
Yahoo groups, etc. Your own mailing list, of course.
By "signature", I mean the automatic blurb or banner that appears below your posts on this and many other forums.
My red banner below, CK's battery of links. |

| Malcolm, those release sites aren't newspapers. You post to them, it's on. Kind of like usenet, if anybody uses that anymore. |

| Yeah, I know they're not newspapers. The concept's no different. Some may get picked up my news organizations and sites and most will not. Depends whether the release sounds like it's all about me or has something you might care about. |

| George if you aren't on LinkedIn and GoodReads, I'd suggest you do that. Also the ning Book Marketing Network group.
These are pretty powerful ways to show something to a lot of people.
The big secret isn't running around making "friends"....it's joining groups. You can join a 500 person group and instantly have the same level of broadcast you have with 500 "friends" that it would take you months of BS to hook up to.
And remember, it's your site you want to lead them to. Be sure you have that as clickable as the review. |

| The response to this thread is a good example of what a writer's forum is all about. Writers sharing ideas and lending a helping hand. |

| For some reason I was able to figure out quickly how the process worked on this site. The fact that I am getting immediate feedback is encouraging. One question on my mind is how excited I should be about a great review. Since I am new at this, I see a really positive review and think that it gives my writing credibility and could lead to sales. Then I think, it's probably an anomaly. I got lucky or something. What do you guys think? |

| Hi George,
I received an excellent review for Mr. Planemaker's Flying Machine written by John C. Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland. It pleased me and everyone said how wonderful it was but it didn't increase sales significantly. Had the review appeared in the NYT, it might have been different ...
Here's the review:

| Shelagh I see that the review is on Young Adult Books Central. Did you post it there or did the reviewer? As you might have guessed, I am trying to have my YA novel reviewed on Young Adult sites. If I could post a review I already have it would be much easier. |
