| A wonderful friend of mine shared this story with me. Very interesting study about believing that you will survive! See you on the island!

| For anyone who hasn't read the article yet, it's about surviving your publishing career (if you have one and are only slightly in touch with reality!) When I read this: " what separates the successful writers with long term careers from those who don't make it is that the successful writers have the perception that they're in control, that if they keep going, somebody will finally see the greatness of their stories." it reminded me of my husband's take on success. He has always said that those who succeed want it the most and they are winners because everyone else gives up. Winners have staying power. They hate the idea of not making it and they won't give up. Most people decide that the thing they are pursuing is taking over their life and they want it back. The hours and hours of pursuing their dream takes them away from their family, stops them socialising, isolates them and, in extreme cases, takes over their waking hours during the day. At some point, they decide that there are other things they need to prioritise. So, they don't give up as such, they just decide to give less time to pursuing their goal and more time doing the things they have been missing out on. As the majority fade away, the most motivated and determined cross the finishing line. Often, it isn't the most talented or most able who succeed: - Quote :
IF
If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don't. If you'd like to win but think you can't, It's almost certain you won't.
If you think you will lose, you've lost. For out in the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will; It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed, you are. You've got to think high to rise. You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man, But sooner or later the one who wins Is the one who THINKS he can.

We bought this poem, printed from a Victorian, hand-printing press, from the Ironbridge Gorge Museums in the Midlands: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]It's amusing the way that modern day psychologists "discover" things that have been known for centuries! |

Isn't it? Back when I had a management job (before I found my dream job), our company made us take that "7 Habits of Highly Effective People seminar.
I couldn't believe the all the excitement over such common sense advice.
The funny thing about habits, after the spending all that money, getting people in management excited over these "new" ideas ... within a week everyone was doing things the same way.
So much for being proactive, thinking win-win, and seeking first to understand. |
