Not really, what it was, kind of, was "Dancing With Wolves" set on another planet...instead of in the Old West with Indians.
It really is beautiful to watch. Try to see it in 3D is you can. San Worthington is an excellent male lead. Sigourney does a really great job. Michelle Rodguez is very good as the doomed second female interest.

dkchristi, the battle scenes was what made this film a bit easier to watch. It was just too predictable, like where the girl blue being talks about her world, just all made up that did not work. The creatures in pandora were so predictable no? They arrive in pandora and you see a forest, a monkey creature swinging in trees and then a land creature like a rhino. wow. What a great original scene. I mean were not seeing anything new or different. Boring.

Lin, so you don't believe in aliens at all? Or is it you don't believe that aliens are advanced enough to reach us?

I love the idea of aliens. Might change my mind if one dropped down and offered me a ride. Then again, I would probably go if it (he/she?) could have me back in time for work on Monday.

I once used a great training video where the woman described a test for risk taking. If an alien ship came roaring down into the local park and strange beings stepped out on a down ramp, would you:
Run toward the ship Run away from the ship Call the police Call your friends Stand and stare Walk slowly toward the ship Get someone to walk with you toward the ship Find your weapon and go home to protect your family Find your weapon and begin firing on those leaving the ship
Each answer had a percentage from trial groups to compare with and then each answer pointed out characteristics of the person responding.

Dear DK, I would stand and stare. My eyes and my mouth would be wide open.
I do not think I would be afraid.
I have seen some wierd stuff in my life time. I am sure I would not even consider it an alien landing, but a stunt of some sort.
I am a creature of known stuff. An alien would have to convince me that he/she came from another place than earth. Speaking in another tongue would not convince me. They would have to really have some super powers to do that.
Beam me up and call me Scotty. That might do it. I am a skeptic.
Love, Betty

I am sure there is a leadership style tied to your reaction - I just don't have the key to exercise anymore.
At different points in my life I would have different reactions. They made a point that most teenagers would run straight for the ship.
Young children would tell their parents to "go see."
Older, wiser would watch and wait before acting.

Avatar is about the invasion of Iraq.
Hawking's comments are indeed based in science. Not the science of empirical evidence, but the science of post-Hubble probabilities. We know now that there are billions of galaxies each with billions of stars.
Remember, too, that the history of intelligent life on earth spans a relatively short window. The visitors' window and ours would have to overlap.
But...
The only way extraterrestrial aliens can visit here is if either their lifespans or their ability to suspend life overcomes the length of time it takes to travel light years. And if their equipment holds up.
And it is doubtless that they'd plan such a trip. They would have observed us as we were lightyears ago. Nothing to visit. Even if they tried, by the time they got here, there would probably be nothing left.
But imagine the frequent-flyer miles they'd earn.
We have no way of knowing the size of the universe. There is a distance beyond which light cannot have traveled far enough for us to observe it.

Walk slowly toward the ship.
Would be a bad idea. Trampled by the stampede running away from the ship.
