PostSubject: How to win friends and influence people   How to win friends and influence people EmptyMon Sep 07, 2009 10:37 am

A Stodghill Says So blog:
What were they thinking? Did the American soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division feel it was OK to invade a hospital, tie up staff, kick in doors, force patients to get out of bed, walk into a ward where female patients were being treated? The latter act was a blatant disregard for local customs. Who ordered this? Is the military taking disciplinary action?
The hospital in Afghanistan is run by a Swedish charitable organization. As they left, the soldiers told the staff to report to them if any members of the Taliban showed up for treatment. The American military would decide if they should be cared for or not. The staff refused. They care for all.
What? We now decide whether or not to treat enemy wounded? We say no, let them suffer? No army from a civilized nation has behaved that way during my lifetime and long before that. How many times have I seen a white flag waved so both sides could pick up their wounded? How many times have I seen an American aid man treat an enemy soldier before litter bearers carried him back to the battalion aid station? We don't do that any more? Instead we invade hospitals?
There is no excuse for such uncivilized behavior. Conditions don't matter, the practices of the enemy don't matter. You represent a civilized nation so you behave in a civilized manner even if you have no personal feelings of humanity toward your fellow man.
Why are we even in Afghanistan? Wasn't it to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden? That was eight years ago.
Or am I wrong about all this? Has the nation changed so much that we don't want to provide health care for our less fortunate but are willing to spend billions on wars in remote countries? What happened? How did America become this way?
In Germany's Hurtgen Forest there is a small monument erected by men in another regiment of my division. It is in honor of an enemy lieutenant. He walked into what he knew was a minefield to try to aid a wounded American. He died in the attempt. Was that an old-fashioned way to look upon an enemy? I hope not.

How to win friends and influence people Empty
PostSubject: Re: How to win friends and influence people   How to win friends and influence people EmptyMon Sep 07, 2009 11:20 am

I worked in Madison, Florida in a trailer on a community college campus that had a window looking out over a civil war cemetary - with two flags flying. They burried all the soldiers from that conflict, right there, together. And in spite of all the Dixie thumping, they rest in peace together.

Dick, I'm not up on the details that you describe; and I find it horrifying. Wag the Dog (I think that was the movie) with Dustin Hoffman haunts me - about a created war in the Middle East to take the nation's attention away from the president's affair. I believe these are the "Bush" wars from their ruling dynasy. Not that they carry all the fault; they were, however, "in charge" in the beginning. The atrocities apparently set a pattern that continues.

I spent time in the Middle East in the 70's; even then, the poverty and ancient way of life was distressing. When I saw the pictures from the two wars, the destruction of what economy was left and the flattening of entire cities to make it worse, I thought of the Crusades - the armies riding in the name of Christ and murdering the infidels in their path.

From my little understanding, these conflicts originate with tribes and differing religious beliefs and culminate with the thirst for oil and power on the world stage. Maybe the wild west had it right afterall: set up a dual between the politicians and let them kill each other for the spoils. Leave our children, siblings, parents and friends at home to deal with disasters or send them abroad for the same reason.

On the otherhand, our history "ain't so great" when it comes to the treatment of our own tribes with differing religious beliefs and the thirst for land and power on the world stage. We killed them off, rounded up the few remaining and starved them on reservations. Even with the Casino riches, many are still impoverished and alcohol addicted. Their ancestry destroyed. We even sent their children away to become "Christians." We built fences and towns and railroads that benefited not one Indian from whom we stole their land or paid a pittance.

I'm sorry; if all I have known is to cover my face and obey the men in my family, I would rather live than have my country destroyed and those I love impoverished or dead. I would see an American soldier and be consumed with hate.

Why are we in Iraq? Same reason, I suppose -whatever that reason is. I think that there are the real reasons and the putative reasons. We've been told the latter but not the former.

I'd be happy to just bring everyone home and let the Middle Easterners do what they always do to each other, good, bad or indifferent.

From this article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090907/ap_on_re_as/as_afghanistan

<< They also barged into the women's wards, he said, adding that strange men entering rooms where women are in beds is a serious insult to the local Muslim culture and word of it could turn the community against international troops. >>

Insult to "Muslim culture," lol. Their practice of cutting people's heads off and videotaping it insults me. I couldn't care less what our troops do over there. Doesn't matter WHAT they do, good, bad or indifferent, the Muslims will be "insulted" and continue setting out their roadside bombs. Maybe the insurgents ARE hiding out in the hospitals, why not? They hide out as farmers, in schools, in their mosques.

I see every human face in its place in the family of the children of our Creator. I believe that war is an atrocity in this time of robots with artificial intelligence. War is as ancient and archaic as incarceration in cages and murder in any of its forms. I am blessed that no war is on my street. I would shout, "Why me?" as the bombs exploded, "I am just a woman with no part in this madness."

However, I do have a part. My taxes support the wars, the war machine, the government that takes us to war. My vote and my voice could shout loud against those things in which I do not believe. But I get up every day and live my simple life and rant and rave among my acquaintances against what I don't understand and do no more except vote on election day.

Dk,

I hear you. Good thoughts.

During the Civil War in Missouri, the Confederate troops stormed a hospital. They said there were people on the roof shooting at them and that gave them reason. My great-grandfather, a Union Soldier at the battle, reported that the people on the roof of the hospital were viewing the battle and not shooting. Over 100 years later in the town where this occurred, both sides are still arguing over this.

In the early years of our country, George Washington wrote a letter to the congregation of a synagogue in Rhode Island avowing that the US "gives to bigotry no sanction," and that when anyone wishes to worship God in his own way, "there shall be none to make him afraid."

LC - no matter who your opponent may be, when you stoop to doing the things they do you are no better than they are.

Why would trying to be better than others get us anywhere, when everyone wants to be valuable. How about different? How about accepting and respecting differences?

Sure, but what does that have to do with the troops who went into that hospital?

That's great, but how does it help the troops in Afghanistan?

And the ones who cut off heads may be a miniscule part of the population, but they're the ones the troops are dealing with, so how they handle things isn't my business.

My point is that I don't care if they entered a hospital and -oh, the horror!- went into a room where there were female patients. I hope the patients got over the trauma. Rolling Eyes

Good post Dick. The reactions from some are typical. We're deemed better than anyone else. Our way is right. Ignore values, ignore cultures that are different from ours. We can do no wrong.
Ignorance is our worst enemy. Spending money on education instead of arms to bring peace has been proposed by many, however much of that education should be applied to Americans.

However,

there are certain rights I hold as crossing over to all cultures, like women's rights and the importance of education for all.

How to win friends and influence people Empty
PostSubject: Re: How to win friends and influence people   How to win friends and influence people EmptyTue Sep 08, 2009 6:26 am

It seems that LC does not differentiate between better and honorable.
Most Germans I fought were honorable while doing a job that makes it difficult to be that way. Not all were honorable, however. On a quit June morning in 1944 a unit of the 2nd SS Panzer Division, Das Reich, entered the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane while enroute to the Normandy battlefields. Children from the surrounding area were in Oradour for an examination. Every man, woman and child, all 642 of them, were killed. The men were lined up and shot. The women and infants were locked in the church, which was set afire. Machine guns were mounted at every exit. The children were told they were going on a picnic, then were gunned down in a field.
A few days after that my division fought against Das Reich. Months later when we entered Germany did we feel the events at Oradour set a precedent that we could follow? Of course not. Not only did the vast majority of Germans not behave in such a manner, but even had they done so it would not have provided us with an excuse to do the same. Honorable men (and women) do not behave that way regardless of what someone else has done. It isn't a matter of being better, it's a matter of being honorable, of behaving decently. No words from anyone can change that. There is no flexibility. No excuse is acceptable.

Marie summed it up well.

LC,

Think as you wish and so will I. I still agree with Dick--now even more. Only about 1,000,000% now.

If the US should ever be invaded,, I hope it is by soldiers of Dick's persuasion and not yours.

We all can think what we want, who said otherwise? All I'm saying is that what you, I, and Dick think is irrelevant to the data the people who went into that hospital had. Not my place to tell them their strategy.
