9/2/2009 Hi Everyone... Who is your favorite film stars from old Hollywood and why ? I'll start first.. Male Stars.... Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Randolph Scott, Cesar Romero, George Raft, Edward G. Robinson, 100's more and they had talent.. Female Stars..... Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Ann Sheridan, 100's more and they had beauty, poise and talent. There's a famous film, I don't know how many people have seen it, titled: " Dinner At Eight," Starring Jean Harlow, Marie Dressler. In it Marie Dressler and Jean Harlow are walking towards the dinning room in this mansion. Jean Harlow looks at Marie Dressler and says: " The other day I was reading a book." Marie Dressler does a double take. She says: " Really," As they walk Harlow continues to talk: " Yes, in the book it states that in the future machinery will take over all the professions in the world." Marie Dressler does a double take and answers: " My dear, that's something you'll never have to worry about." That's a classic line, they don't make them like that anymore, if it's ever on Turner Classic Movies you have to watch it.. Cheers.....Joe...

Audrey Hepburn wasn't as good in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner as Katharine Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Joe's list of males with Stewart and Fonda added suits me fine, but for females I'd put Ginger Rogers and Ida Lupino at the top of the list. My late mystery writer friend Ross Spencer once said, "When I was a young fellow I had a serious case of the hots for Ginger Rogers." I said, "Didn't we all, Spence, didn't we all." The young fellow sitting on the steps of his Akron boardinghouse came to town seeking his fortune. He worked at several rubber factories, a drug store and a men's haberdashery but evey job fell through so he took up selling pots and pans door to door. Evenutually he decided there must be a better way to earn a living. Maybe I'll write a blog about him. Thanks for the idea, Joe.

I should have added Spencer Tracy and Cagney to my list. Katharine Hepburn, too. And Fred Astaire, although it beats me how Marie can pick him and not add Ginger Rogers. Doesn't anyone recognize the young man whose picture is with my first response to this thread? He didn't spend the rest of his life selling pots and pans.

9/2/2009 Two other great films : " The Postman Always Rings Twice," Lana Turner and John Garfield. " They Drive By Night," Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, George Raft. There's a great line in this film, a scene between Ann Sheridan and George Raft. In the truckers coffee shop George Raft is admiring Ann Sheridan from the back ( She's a waitress) and says to her: " Classy Chassy." She turns and Replys: " You couldn't afford the down payment on the headlights." Cheers..Joe..

Yes, Marie, I noticed you're a gal. We old Pinkerton detectives spot things like that right away. Joe is correct, the young guy at the boardinghouse in Akron is Clark Gable.

I would add to the list Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Jack Lemon Tony Curtis Walter Matthau, John Wayne. These were great men who made me laugh and added excitment to my life. To the ladies list I add Doris Day. As for comedy I liked so many but my favorites were by far the Marx Brothers. Musically also Bing Crosby gets my vote. I loved the Road movies with Bob Hope. I own a vast collection of DVD's (hundreds). I am an avid collector of films. All of them have touched my life in some way past and present, so my list is enormous. Cinema has played such a huge part in my life, I love movies.

Now we are rolling Ahad. That man was a great hero. He single handedly won WWII. Great cowboy great soldier and great pilot but a lousy Roman Centurion.

Doris Day? Say it ain't so, dmondeo. But you are right about John Wayne, he won World War II without help from anyone. Unfortunately all his battles were fought on the back lot of a Hollywood studio. I'll add Vivien Leigh, Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster and Richard Widmark to my list, but it seems we are creeping into modern times with a few offerings. All the cowboys mentioned were creampuffs compared to Tom Mix and Buck Jones.

Now Dick the only reason Doris got a mention was I felt she needed a charitable mention seeing as how she always reminded me of an auntie I once had (seriously!) I had no romantic interest. My sister loved her musicals and the movies she made with Rock Hudson. I found those quite funny and used to enjoy seeing Mr Hudson get one over on her so to speak. Sofia Lauren on the other hand well!! Thats my justification over.

Vivien Leigh was my favorite female star because she reminded me of my mother. I will try to post her picture at 21 here. Well, that didn't work. Any advice as to how to get a picture to show up here? Thanks.
