A Stodghill Says So blog:
Doctor's Orders Dickwithcap
This was the morning for my once a month shot of energy and vitality juice so the doc and I had our usual exchange of ideas. He said, "Yesterday was nice and sunny so did you do some walking?"
I thought about it and told him, "Yeah, I walked out to the kitchen a couple of times to freshen up my cuppa tea."
He shook his head, something he does quite often, and mumbled a sentence or two about the benefits of fresh air and sunshine. I wasn't exactly sure what he was trying to say so I said, "If it comes down to walking or writing, I'd rather write."
The subject then turned to a prescription one of the nine docs who work for him gave me last month for vitamin D pills. It cost eight bucks at the pharmacy upstairs which seemed OK until we got home and found there was one pill in the bottle. I said, "Staying alive isn't important enough for me to lay down eight simoleons a month for one lousy pill."
He shook his head and said, "If you'd get out and walk in the sunshine you wouldn't need the vitamin D pill."
I said, "No, if I got out and walked in the sunshine I'd have to come back and have you cut out some more skin cancers. You're determined to get me out there one way or another, aren't you?"
He shook his head again and said, "You never listen to anything I tell you anyway."
We agreed on that particular point so we switched over to talking about Marlon Brando motorcycle movies. All this time Jackie was sitting over in a corner shaking her head. I guess there's something about that particular office that affects people that way.

A Harley-Davidson shirt and pants three inches too long so the back of the legs were under his riding boots. This was fitting because I was in the Harley-Davidson treatment room. Amazing decorations, including the battered shirt he was wearing when he crashed and broke his ankle.
The H-D room is nicer than the Los Angeles Dodgers room or the Top 40 records room or any of the others except my favorite, the Cafe in Rome room.

The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin is a classic BBC sitcom. One of the characters, Doc Morrissey came up with this diagnosis:

Doc Morrissey: Do you find you can't finish the crossword like you used to,
nasty taste in the mouth in the mornings, can't stop thinking about sex,
can't start doing anything about sex, wake up with a sweat in the
mornings, keep falling asleep during "Play For Today"?
Reggie: That's extraordinary, Doc! That's exactly how I've been feeling.
Doc Morrissey: So have I. I wonder what it is? Take two aspirins.

I loved the Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. Wish they'd show it again on PBS. His boss, who really hadn't gotten all that far in life, was always saying, "I didn't get where I am today by. . ." And Geoffrey Palmer was working on a pig farm in some episodes.
Then Reginald - was his real name Leonard Rossiter? - was great as the landlord of a boardinghouse in a later series. He was a master of sleaze.

Yes, it was Leonard Rossiter (his boss was CJ "I didn't get where I am today by thinking."). The later series was Rising Damp. Both series were brilliant.

The fact is, nobody does TV series as well as the British.

I enjoy the public television British comedy episodes when I'm in the States. My all time favorite is "Keeping Up Appearances."

You should, Alice. He's a great one.

Abe, back whe Keeping Up Appearances was still being filmed I had a brief interview with Geoffrey Hughes, who played Onslow. He isn't as big as he looks on TV. He said, "The first thing I did when we arrived in Akron was find a restroom. The man standing next to me said, "Hello, Onslow."
My favorite of the British comedies is As Time Goes By, but there have been so many great ones it's hard to keep track of them.
