Reflection In The Mirror
A. W. Nutter

My reflection in the mirror reveals
Lines on my face from life’s ordeals
An old man staring back at me
The boy long gone, where can he be?

Looking intently I slowly find
A mischievous child laying dormant inside
Placed into a dark corner curled up in fear
With my encouragement he begins to appear

Come out little one I’ll let you stay
Never again will I tuck you away
A smile adorns our young and old features
Realizing we’re safe from predatory creatures

My reflection in the mirror quickly reveals
A new found freedom from life’s ordeals
Where once stood a hollow old man
Now stands one filled with his greatest fan
God bless the child in all of us.

AW, this new avatar of mine, at least for now, looks just like the "me" inside my head, until I am confronted by one of those mirrors. I tend to avoid them.

I felt pretty good for quite a while until I realized I need glasses. I made the mistake of looking in that awful magnifying mirror in the hotel bathroom just before heading out dressed to the nines - poof! I was lucky it was dark everywhere but in that ghastly mirror.

However, when I run on the beach, I still feel 17; and there are no mirrors anywhere, just that 17 year old girl inside.

Christi and Ann, I do not think either one of you has anything to worry about.

I wonder sometimes how I should act at this advanced age, but the answer is the same as it has always been, to be myself, that self that keeps evolving however.

There is so much history in my life: children, grandchildren, wars, many Presidents, travels, sadness and happiness. Sometimes thinking about it overwhelms me.

You are exactly right Carol a person has to be themselves and the older we get the more we change. The amount of history you have is only a testimony to where you have been, and what you have experienced, these things shape us all.

This is another good one, Nutter. And so close to home, too!
