| People just love gossip and nice things don't make very good gossip because it doesn't scandalize or scintillate. |

| Carol, Amsterdam is quite famous for window shopping as well as Paris. Window shopping can be fun. Making purchases? Don't know about that. |

| When I was a Pinkerton op I once had the assignment of checking into a large hotel near the Cleveland airport. Once in my room I was to ask the bellhop if he could send up a bottle of whiskey. The next question was to ask if he could send up a female companion. |

| I flew into Cyprus for a meeting with a top businessman. We went to dinner and a very pretty young lady accompanied us. I assumed it was his girl friend. During dinner, I tried my best to ignore her flirtations. When we returned to the hotel, we had a drink, and then my host left. I decided to go to my room and said good night to the young lady. She said she would be retiring also and accompanied me to the elevator. Strangely enough, her room was on the same floor as mine. When I got to my room, her room happened to be adjacent to mine. She opened her door and then wondered if my room was the same as hers. She walked in and looked around. I was very nervous thinking that my host may suddenly appear and get the wrong impression. I though it could cost me the deal I was working on. I politely excused myself and went to bed. The next day I learned that the girl had been acquired for my pleasure. Talk about being naïve! |

| When the agency manager handed me the assignment I said, "I know what to do if he sends up the whiskey, but what do I do if he sends up the girl?" He laughed. "If you don't know by now it's probably too late to learn." A very unsatisfactory answer. One, I'm sure, that the New York headquarters would not have approved. When I got to the airport, the plane I was supposed to be arriving on was an hour late. When I finally was shown to my room the bellhop informed me that, "In Ohio a bottle of whiskey can only be had at a state liquor store, but the bar downstairs is still open." When I asked the second question he drew himself up and said, "Sir, this is not that kind of hotel." So the client (the hotel management) would have been happy and I was off the hook. |

| The same kind of establishment down here--many years back--was politely called "the ladies sewing circle".
Wasn't much sewing going on. |
