I imagine it's self-published.  That's what I find with a lot of self-published and small press stories - they are well written (grammar, etc.) but lack what I call "punch" or the "something" that makes a work memorable.  I have a hard time reading to the end of many and I admire that you can review them.  When they are works of friends, or my own, it's painful.

I didn't check. I can usually tell SP by grammar/punctuation/spelling errors, but many times I can tell just by the quality of the story itself. Scenes that wouldn't be 'real'. Characters who wouldn't behave like real people (cops, lawyers, etc.). In the next few months I have several SP stories that pretty much wasted my time.
