We missed you on the forum and wondered if there was a problem. I hope that you will be well enough to enjoy Christmas. A glass of wine might speed your recovery:

Sorry, but it will take more than a glass of wine to fix her.  If wine was the cure, it would not be such a problem.

Actually, Alice, a little wine does help, for a while Very Happy

You know better than I do about the oddities of these conditions.  I'm sure RA has fewer than PD.  I read recently that marijuana helps PD, but as far as I kbow, it's still illegal there, and somehow, I just can't picture you with a joint.

My current oddity is that, since I have an autoimmune disease, my meds are designed to lower my immune system, so I'm now recovering from my first case of flu sonce I quit smoking 16 years ago.  It's left me tired, and ironically, a bit werk-kneed (just what I needed) so Dr Nelson gave me a couple of cortisone injections yesterday to tide me over. It's beginning to work already.

Since Chris has to work tonight, it will be just Lynn and me for dinner.  I'm slow-cooking us a cornish hen in white wine for us  to split, with wild-rice dressing.  Did you know that wild rice isn't really a grain?  That makes it OK for Lynn's paleo diet.  Also having Brussel's sprouts and butternut squash.  And more white wine to drink.  drunken

Sounds good, Ann! I'm about to bake a chicken and leek pie to be served with broccoli followed by fresh raspberries and blueberries with yoghurt. Unfortunately, I ran out of butter, so my husband has just popped out to buy some!

Thanks to all or you for your good wishes. I am really touched. My RA keeps getting under better control and my flu symptoms were fairly mild and are also over. I still tire easily and have to pace myself, but I know that will pass, too.

When I went to my dr's office Wenesday, he finished his part of the paperwork for my handicapped parking placards. Now all I have to do is write a check for the fee and mail it to the Bexar County tax collector who will (hopefully) mail them to me soon. It will make grocery shopping so much easier. I have a notion that it might be fun, on the days my joints are unhappy, to ride around that enormous supermarket in a riding cart. Dear Ann, are you feeling better? 810142

I got a bit of a delayed shock while I was reading over the dr's part of the form, to see he had checked the permanently disabled box. I guess it was the first time I actually thought of it that way. It was a good thing, though. I had to recognize it so I can really start to get past it. I am looking forward to 2015 being a "very good year," as we wine drinkers might say. drunken

Post script: Good news in every struggle, though. I checked my BMI this morning after weighing. I am officially "normal," whatever that means. Don't ask me how, though. It's just been part of the RA. I wouldn't advise trying it.

Take care, Ann Your great attitude will get you far.  I am surprised you have to pay for  a handicapped parking permit.  In WA state they are free.

Thank you, Alice.

It's just a small fee, and it helps to defray the cost, and that keeps taxes a bit lower.

Dear Annie,
I have been so wrapped up into my own doings of late that I have not paid much attention here.  I am sorry about that.  I do not like to hear that you are ill in any way.  I am glad that you have medical help.
It sounds like your attitude is good.  That is important, I think.  Winter and RA are not nice together.  Keep warm, my friend.
Love,
Betty

My stepdad had RA and just be careful with meds as they were his downfall in the end.  I think it was the gold shots that I don't believe they use anymore.

I hope you and Shelagh put together that cook book as you have presented many great recipes with photographs and explanations similar to what Shelagh recommends.

Isn't diet important with the RA condition?  My friend who had cancer rear it's ugly head twice had really changed her eating to all organic, fresh and home-cooked.  She doesn't eat meat but does eat fish and a little dairy.  She's down on me for eating meat, but I gave it up years ago and ended up severely, chronically and dangerously anemic.  So, I eat meat. Whatever thing it has doesn't come from anywhere else that my body assimilates.

I think we talked about your step-dad once before, DK. My mom had it, too, and suffered as much near the end from those side effects. It was over 20 years ago, and, yes, she had the gold treatments in the beginning, too. Steroids do not help, either, but are sometimes necessary in the beginning of treatment.

I first started having symptoms in my hands several years ago, and because of Mom's reactions to her meds, I was determined to treat what I tried hard to believe was only ordinary arthritis with diet, herbal remedies and natural supplements, and they worked well up until the past spring. By summer, I realized it was getting much worse, though, so now I have this wonderful rheumatologist who has helped me over the worst of it. He assured me from the beginning that much progress has been made over the last 25 years. About 2 months ago he added a biologic drug to my protocol. Biologics are very new, based on natural compounds, and far more targeted than the older treatments. What makes RA different from ordinary arthritis is that it is an auto-immune disease, so in order to treat it, you have to supress the immune system, and that's where the side effects come in. It is much easier to catch other people's bugs.

As far as diet goes, the recommendations run the gamut from veganism to strict paleo. I have been eating fresh foods, natural and organic, for several years now. The most important thing about animal protein and dairy is to make sure the animals get to roam free and eat a primarily grass-fed diet. I can't seem to eat much of anything these days, and my weight has been dropping radically. I can't get as much excercise as I did, and while losing body fat is a good thing, losing muscle isn't. So when I do eat, I include more meat, so long as it is clearly labeled free-range, which is more important than organic, I've been learning.

Thanks again to you and everyone for support and advice. I feel like I'm much less alone.

Annie
