Enjoyed your blog! Perhaps we could all add a few ideas to the personal touch gifts. A friend gave me a jar full of affirmative sayings to open one each day. It was fun. She decorated the jar.

Home grown herbs are popular. Pick up a few cups at a thrift store, put stones in the bottom, some potting earth and herb seedlings - the gift that keeps on giving.

Take a piece of fleece (on sale often); cut two inch strips all around the square. tie knots in them. Add a stuffed animal to match. Great children'ts gift.

Thanks Smile After writing out ten ideas, it became clear to me that I could write out a hundred without to much effort! I've been doing these regifting ideas for about the last twenty years or so, with my children. I love your fleece square idea and herb garden. Those knots - tie ME in knots lol, I did this once for my sixteen year old daughter and it just about drove me nuts Very Happy

We could collect ideas and create a "home made gifts" ebook.

I started collecting today, if you are serious about it, I do want to keep it limited to 100. I don't know what I would do about photographs, I have no photos for these projects to put in the book.

And it would need pictures of the gifts.... maybe someone on the forum can suggest how to get pictures.

I guess we'd have to make all the gifts and photo them.....or make line drawings ...

If I made all the photos myself, that would give me time to finish before my personal deadline - my goal for publishing is Fall 2013. I'm going out today to hit the local craft store and thrift stores.

I think it's a great ebook idea; but you may want to solicit ideas (with .jpg pictures if they have them) in exchange for listing the author with a brief bio with their contribution (as in the books Shelagh Watkins puts together).

What do you think? It's not an easy task; just ask Shelagh, especially if you get contributions. People tend not to edit their work very well and you become editor, etc..... then there's the formatting.

I'll ask her how this works. What percentage do the contributing authors get of the royalties? I am dipping my toes into something that I've never done, so I need advice.

If it's simply contributing a regift or personal gift idea and there are many contributors, you put out the call for contributing an idea for the goal of advertising - and no royalties. If you find you are selling $millions, then let your conscience be your guide. :-)

I was paid $25 advance for short stories plus 1/10 of the royalties (10 authors) in two anthologies. So far, I think there are enough royalties to pay back the advance on one anthology and I think I still owe toward the advance on the other....

I receive $50/500 words for some freelancing I am doing, and the steady income though small beats the royalties from anthologies by far.

However, the advertising value of adding an idea is sort of like a printed blog - it helps the branding. The editor (you in this case) does have quite of bit of work to set up the ebook, etc. and the print book if it's popular, so some measure if royalties is appropriate for the advertising value to the contributors.

How-to-do books are quite popular, especially in these economic times.

Usually the contributors buy a book to have a record of their contribution. You could do one of those free promotions for ebooks (free downloads for x number of hours) and contributors could download copies of the ebook then.

Shelagh has taught me all I know in addition to the anthologies in which I have short stories with publishers. Two are 'royalty paying' with a publisher, two are advertising only, one is for charity (a cookbook) and another had 19 authors (imagine sharing those royalties). It had lots of good stories but sold few books.

The cookbook is rather clever and sells well. you could look at it for an example; Killer Recipes by Susan Whitfield. The review at Amazon listed all contributors and their contributions i think...
