PostSubject: Author abandons WIP after it's copied all over the Internet   Tue Sep 02, 2008 9:21 am

A friend or colleague of Stephenie Meyer allowed a copy of the next book in the "Twilight Series," Midnight Sun, to be distributed all over the Internet. Now, Meyer can't finish the book.

For more info, see this morning's Writers Notebook post, "Copying without Shame": http://jockstewart.typepad.com/writers_notebook/2008/09/copying-without.html

How awful! A good reminder to the rest of us.

With I-net theft, I am always puzzled when someone places their work online if they plan to have it published. If it is something for fun, a blog, etc., that's another matter.

Glad I read it. Makes me think twice about posting my short story. Thanks for the reminder, Malcolm.

It also made me think about the time a NY Times bestselling author spoke at a conferrence about that very thing. She had to put her computer in the shop, and when she picked it up, the tech said something about his wife wanted him to tell her she loved the new WIP and couldn't wait for the book to come out so she could find out how it ends. Of course the writer was stunned and asked how either of them knew anything about her new WIP and he, in all innocence, said they'd seen it on her computer. Another lesson.

It just goes to show that in some instances you can't trust anyone - your best friend or your friendly IT guy!

Note to self: password all files for protection!

I try to only post snippets of stuff. Nothing else because publishers tend to see posting on the Internet as publication. They may not want to play second fiddle to a blog when they're looking for fresh material.

Best I can tell, Meyer's material wasn't on the Internet; I think it was a file copy of the material which somebody began sending around via e-mail.
