| I didn't read your blog about critique groups, but I know people who have had great benefit from them. Sometimes they accompany a writer's group. |

| Nice post. I've been in good critique groups, but now live in a small town where there aren't that many writers. The biggest problem is often lack of participation. That is, if you meet monthly and hand out materials at one meeting, you really expect people to have read them by the next meeting. The group falls a part when a lot of people have excuses about not reading the material.

| You wonder what peoples' expectations were when they first arrived. If they can't read the materials, do you really expect them to write on a regular basis or show up to read? I know a group that meets once a month. I was in one. My last group meets once a week. |

| Once a week might be better. Gives people more meetings to share their work. When it was once a month, people had to wait too long since there wasn't time to cover a lot of MSS in one evening.

| I knew I would have difficulty keeping up with the reading, so I didn't go but to one meeting. However, the people there were doing very well with their critique partners. They seemed to find a person whose interests were compatible to pass their writing back and forth. Along the way, they would change partners as the group changed. It seemed quite dynamic.
Even one critique partner helps. My friend critiqued by manuscripts and is well-educated. I think she wasn't as critical as a more objective colleague might have been. |

| Sometimes, all one needs is one, good critique partner! Of course, it helps if they're also a writer and can be very objective without thinking they're risking a friendship by saying some things just aren't working in the MS.

| I had a colleague review a manuscript and he said, "I just can't get into it at all. Sorry." That was a bit daunting. I had another review a different manuscript and he said, "Too much narration and not enough dialogue." Of course, dialogue is my most difficult part. So, I wrote it again full of dialogue. Now he says, "The conversations feel contrived. I lost interest." |

| I have the best teacher in the world…he is dead, but before he died, he put everything he knew on paper. He was a NY Publisher, Editor, Writer, and teacher. He edited some of the best authors in the USA. His name was Sol Stein. His easy to read book, has replaced the four dozen I had. “Sol Stein on Writing, by Sol Stein.
Any problem you may have on writing is addressed in his book. |
