Amazon has set up a page for books with highlighted quotes from readers. This is Mr. Planemaker's Flying Machine's list of "Shared Notes and Highlights":

You've collected some nice reviews there! I hope you'll reconsider writing again. Maybe you just need a break to come back refreshed.

I'm conducting an interesting experiment that is ongoing. I set the fifth part of a nine part story free on Monday (I had previously given away the first four parts). A customer on the Amazon UK Kindle forum complained that it wasn't fair to set part five free without the other parts. So, on Wednesday, I set part one free, followed on consecutive days by parts two, three and four. I haven't promoted these free downloads, so it's interesting to see how many readers find the first part without being told and how many stick with the series. Numbers are very low, but it is informative.

Curious to hear the results. I recently started a new Kindle Select project with Redstone Stories, and took all the single freebies off the list.

The 2nd edition of A Myth is still doing well, and with the 60 day delay in royalty deposits, I am now assured of receiving some nice deposits continuing into June, as the sales are going up slightly every month so far. The 90 days will be up in mid-July, which is about the same time I head for NJ for a few weeks, to be Grannie Annie again.

I have set myself a deadline for finishing Daniel's Daughter by that time.

Wondering if I should do something similar to LC's weight control thread as an added incentive to keep at it regularly.

Okay, the results are in. At the end of last year, I gave away parts 1-4 of the short story, A Family Arrangement. This produced a few sales of the full story. The total number of downloads for Part 1: 369. At the end of the recent three days of free downloads for Parts 5 & 6, the totals were 35 and 38 respectively, which is what I would have predicted: one in ten approximately.

From the comments on the Amazon UK forum, it is clear that the customers who are still interested in the story want it for free. Although written in nine parts (10,000+ words), it is only the first instalment of a much longer story: a family saga. The feedback I've received suggests that it would be very difficult to promote if I wrote the full story (which continues to present day). I don't have the enthusiasm to write it all down and then spend hours and hours trying to persuade readers to buy the book. Unlike my children's novels, I know this story from start to finish; I know the twists and turns, heartache and joy. The difficult part would be in the research, which would be extensive, to bring the book through the decades since the nineteen twenties. It was an interesting experiment and provided all the information I sought. The outcome frees me to do other things.

I'm not following -did you sell 35 and 38 copies? I guess that's not bad?

Where are the reader comments? I looked on Amazon UK but couldn't find them.

If you're not interested in writing, maybe your calling is to be a publisher? Build up that business?

I think she is interested. She has come to the conclusion it is not profitable.
I have arrived at that same conclusion for which some folks vilify me.
I call it a realistic outlook. There are only so many hours in the day, each person must decide how best to use them.

I don't write to make a profit so much as I write because I have to write. Sharing makes it much more fun. It is nice to get paid for sharing. I am open to learning better ways to do that. Right now, my non-fiction reprint is helping to pay for the time I'm spending writing fiction. I'm actually bringing in more from the reprint than I did with the first edition. I think much of that is due to the price. It's enough lower than the original for buyers to be happy, but high enough that people are borrowing it as well. I'm even selling the new paperback version. Not so many, but it all helps.

I like the way royalties are being paid. The twice-a-year checks were hard to verify, and now that I'm 60 days in, I can get a projection that tells me I will be getting paid pretty well through the end of June.

I have yet to see an increase in sales with the new Select decision. Over 100 downloaded the free Redstone Stories. I have no intention of offering RV free until I'm getting closer to being able to release DD - the 2nd of the trilogy.

It seems the more books you have to offer, the better your chances of actually selling some of them. It's all an ongoing process.

Ann,
You have done well. You enjoy it and others enjoy your efforts. Obviously it is your thing.
Stay with it.

I highlighted the word "Free" in the above quote. One in ten read the free downloads and, hence, went on to read parts 5 & 6.

In response to this comment on the Amazon UK forum:

"Can we move on from 'Size Matters'? The argument that a story takes at least 77,435 words to tell is patently foolish. A brilliant short story is possibly more rewarding in 'smiles per page' or 'giggles per words' than some mighty tome. Of course I like to get 'value for money' and 'bang for my buck' ... but I'm not paying for electrons or ink or paperclips - I'm paying the the inspiration and skill of the author converting an idea into a read. The story about itemised bill from the expert being: ink = £1; Knowing what to write = £9,999 holds true."

Another customer replied: "I agree. Though a brilliant short is rare so I'd want a collection for simply good ones at even the lowest charge." In other words, if the book is self-published, it should be priced at 99c or free.

The publishing side takes up as much if not more of my time. Last year was gruelling. I published a memoir translated from German to English, a textbook and an anthology of short stories. The first two books would have been enough work for the year. The anthology was the third in the Forever series (published every two years) -- it was something I could have done without!

Yes, Alice, spot on; the profit margin is too small to sustain my interest.

Well my experiment with KDP yielded 208 downloads free in two days and no follow-up sales of anything. No reviews. No nada.

Earlier rounds with select - offered a couple of the short stories free. That led to increased sales for the anthology - for a little while. these works have been available for a while now. Will have to wait and see.

Did you think it would all just happen?

No, I thought there would be more downloads, though. I advertised on all the sites recommended that were still in operation. I did all the legwork, etc. I had hoped for enough downloads to at least hit the 100 list so it would show up anyway. it went up to about 1400...

I had no expectations but hope springs eternal.

Arirang is the name of a Korean TV station. Have you contacted them?

There's also a supermarket you could contact and ask if they would take your book on a sale or return basis. Here's the facebook page (click on the about link to find the email contact address):

Shelagh! You are a genius beyond what you realize and I am a dolt. Garden Grove, California is my former home. I moved from there to N. Florida and then to Korea. Five years later, Garden Grove, California was all Korean. I went back to my old house and a very nice Korean family showed me the backyard where the coi were still in the pond we had built with a waterfall. The neighborhood looked the same - with Korean accents and Korean people :-)

The entire city is full of Korean stores and shops. The point is, I should have marketed Arirang in my former home town!!! I would have an excuse to go there. I even speak some Korean still (and spoke a lot when I lived in Korea).

Shelagh's effort combined with your quality book, and a touch of synchronicity.

It all works together.
