Media and Speculation Empty
PostSubject: Media and Speculation   Media and Speculation EmptyThu Apr 18, 2013 10:58 pm

The media is having a great time with recent events. There was the student massacre in Connecticut, now we have the Boston Marathon killings and the explosion at the fertilizer plant in Texas. This morning they reported a shooting at MIT.
Not too long ago, Americans were afraid to travel to Europe. Europeans are now fearful of travel to the USA.
Current events are also reflected in the Stock market. Rumors and speculations create fears, real or imagined.
Now that some photos have been released of suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, unclear as they are, it may be that some innocent who may look similar, will be shot by a would-be hero. Whoever committed the crime needs to be brought to justice. That’s clear. Speculation that they may be part of some terrorist cell or an even larger group is fanning even more speculation. Innocent until proven guilty sounds good, however in practice it is not always the case.

Media and Speculation Empty
PostSubject: Re: Media and Speculation   Media and Speculation EmptyFri Apr 19, 2013 7:59 am

Looks like is isn't speculation any longer, Abe:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/20/us/boston-marathon-bombings.html?_r=0

Quote :
One of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings was killed early Friday morning after leading the police on a wild chase after the fatal shooting of a campus police officer, while the other was sought in an immense manhunt that shut down large parts of the area. Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts said residents of Boston and its neighboring communities should “stay indoors, with their doors locked.”

The two suspects were identified by law enforcement officials as brothers. The surviving suspect was identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass., a law enforcement official said. The one who was killed was identified as his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26. ...

Officials said that the two men were of Chechen origin. Chechnya, a long-disputed, predominantly Muslim territory in southern Russia sought independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union and then fought two bloody wars with the authorities in Moscow. Russian assaults on Chechnya were brutal and killed tens of thousands of civilians, as terrorist groups from the region staged attacks in central Russia. In recent years, separatist militant groups have gone underground, and surviving leaders have embraced fundamentalist Islam.

The family lived briefly in Makhachkala, the capital of the Dagestan region, near Chechnya, before moving to the United States, said a school administrator there. Irina V. Bandurina, secretary to the director of School No. 1, said the Tsarnaev family left Dagestan for the United States in 2002 after living there for about a year. She said the family — parents, two boys and two girls — had lived in the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan previously.

The brothers have substantial presences on social media. On Vkontakte, Russia’s most popular social media platform, the younger brother, Dzhokhar, describes his worldview as “Islam” and, asked to identify “the main thing in life,” answers “career and money.” He lists a series of affinity groups relating to Chechnya, and lists a verse from the Koran, “Do good, because Allah loves those who do good.”

Meantime I am speculating that Rick Perry owes Obama an apology. Let's hope he offers one.

Media and Speculation Empty
PostSubject: Re: Media and Speculation   Media and Speculation EmptyFri Apr 19, 2013 8:13 am

It is still speculation in my view. CNN made many blunders in reporting yesterday. They made fiction out of scattered bits of information and later retracted what they reported. One reporter said the suspect had the complexion of Middle East origin. A darker skin could apply to many Americans. It is still too early to arrive at conclusions. People are so anxious to learn what happened that they are grasping at straws. It could very well be Islamists, but I'm not yet convinced until all the facts are in. Feeding fears is what the media is doing. Killing by anyone is wrong and must be punished. We don't want it to be an American and therefore are pleased when the finger is pointing elsewhere.
We should have more patience before jumping to conclusions. Reporting known facts without speculaltion is good reporting. Let the FBI and other law enforcement organizations complete their investigation before drawing conclusions.

I think the facts are pretty clear at this time. What to do is the problem.

What's disgusting is what the New York Post did yesterday
putting two photos of two young men claiming they were
he ones the FBI was looking for, come to find out the NY
Post screwed up, they weren't the ones and now these two
young boys are terrified because they were labeled, I hope
they sue the hell out of the Post, media has to learn you can't
jump the cart, check all sources first !
Cheers...Joe..Very Happy
