I have no experience of Twitter, never used it.

Any of my friends here have any tips for me?

Open an account (eg. aaspaceagent) and then follow Published Authors: @PublishedAuth Then look at the list of followers and start following those you recognise.

Specifically, theres somebody I desperately need to establish a friendship with... Laughing

I have an account, but I don't tweet; I just follow a few people who do.

I do know that if you want to send a DM (direct message), you both have to follow each other and include permission in your status. If a public message is OK, just join and "reply" to his/her messages.

I think scratch

Once you've joined, you can send a tweet to @thepersonyouwanttocontact before you follow anyone or have any followers. The tweet will go into your feed, but no one will see it because you won't have any followers. You can delete the tweet if you receive a response and then start following people.

So far, a joy. One question though: I have a few people already following. What if you didn't like being followed. Can you "unfollow" someone who's following you?

That's funny, Ahad. I can't answer your questions, but you are someone I'd like to follow to be informed of your latest exploits into the universe.

I have some followers who I don't recognize. I'm guessing that having followers must have some significance, but what?

You can't "unfollow" followers, Abdul, but you can block them. In your list of followers, next to the "Follow" button, there's a small icon with a pull-down menu. One of the items on the menu is "Block @thisfollower". You can find twitter basics here:
