Sorry to read about your latest issues, Dick. Too bad chocolate isn't a cure for anemia. Seems to help everything else...Smile at least for me. Or, maybe it just makes me feel better... Smile Anemia - Avoid it like the Plague - Page 2 143616

As to the liver...I can eat it if I have to...but...I still have a problem consuming an organ that filters out toxins. Seems just wrong, somehow.

I agree, Rhett. I'm gonna stick with the chocolate. A diet that allows you to eat as much of it as you want can't be all bad, can it? Especially when you go ahead and eat the things you aren't supposed to. Aside from liver, of course. Anyway, I've been on that diet (at least as far as the chocolate is concerned) for eight years and I'm not about to change.

Oh Rhett!

I am glad you mentioned chocolate! It isn't a cure for anemia. However ....

According to organicfacts.net the flavonoids compounds found in DARK chocolate are good for fighting the anemic condition.

Gotta love the stuff !!!!

I would much rather fight anemia by eating chocolate than liver!

Ah Hah!

Who made those little liver pills? Did they have liver in them? Remember Cod Liver Oil? You have not lived until you have been chased down with a wooden spoon full of this lovely stuff, your mouth pried open by squeezing your teeth out of your mouth, spoon shoved in and all the while bawling your eyes out, snot running down your face and your evil mother looking triumphant! After that dose, you would hide for hours in the mulberry tree and walk on the roof of the old barn just below. Until, of course, you had to go to the out house with the daddy long legs, the flies and the sears catalog. Then, you fainted.

Dick, take the chocolate every time. Or the mud pies. I take vitamin B.

Love,
Betty

The next day would come the castor oil.

Nice to hear from you Rhett. I was beginning to wonder where you were.

JoElle, I heard on the news that the ddark chocolate is good for you, but the good properties are much diminished through the process of making milk chocolate. Something to do with heating and blending with milk, I suspect.

Don't forget to drink your juice.

"Mild to moderate iron deficiency anemia is treated by iron supplementation with ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate. Vitamin C may aid in the body's ability to absorb iron."

Cod liver oil - my God, what an experience that was! Betty described it perfectly, but I didn't have a mulberry tree to run to for comfort.

I didn't mean to complain about the anemia. I accepted it long ago as a side effect of the tumor on the pituitary gland. No one knows what causes them.
I was told to have surgery and followed the routine of visiting several doctors. Only one, an opthamoligist (spelling?) thought it wasn't a good idea. After following the chain of command I finally talked to the surgeon. He was an honest man. When I asked him what he recommended he said, "As a surgeon, I have to recommend surgery, but it wouldn't be fair to ask me what I'd say if it were my father or my brother."
That was enough for me. A little loss of vision, a little loss of memory - yeah, sure.

ah...I have been around, just incredibly dingy...

My sister passed away suddenly about a month ago...so, we've all been dealing with the sad aftermath.

Now, I actually have a couple of brain cells left to communicate. So, I will try to do so more often...

Dick,
I think you made a good decision. Surgery at any age is risky, but in your case, more so. I will not go into the things that have happened within my family of aging relatives, but the worst scenarios came after surgery.

From what you have said, you have good health care. It is important to have a physician you can trust.

PostSubject: Re: Anemia - Avoid it like the Plague   Anemia - Avoid it like the Plague - Page 2 EmptyFri Aug 08, 2008 8:06 am

Okay, here is what I got from this thread:

Eat lots of chocolate (preferably the special dark)
avoid cod liver oil at all costs (castor oil, too)
It is important to find a doctor you trust
tumors can have side effects
not too many people like liver
avoid anemia!

Glad you are back among us, Rhett! This place is good therapy. I will take you any way you can get here, dingy or not!

Even I remember getting dosed with cod liver oil. Bloody awful stuff, even when it was mixed with malt. We didn't have a mulberry tree however, and my mother was very quick with a wooden spoon as a beat you up stick, so we took the stuff without complaining.

Rhett, my condolences on the loss of your sister. Have missed seeing you around and am glad to see you again!

Thank you, all.

I remember the cod liver oil stuff, too. Hey, if you were just trying to "play sick" to avoid school--one dose of that stuff and you never faked it again! Ever. pale

It's a wonder any of us survived childhood.

Betty, it was Carter who made those little liver pills. I remember one of their ads:

Sour and sunk was Gloomy Gus,
'til Happy Hooligan told the cus,
to chase away his aches and ills.
with Carter's Little Liver Pills.

I don't remember the slogan, Dick, but I do remember that they made him remove the term 'liver' from the name since it neither helped nor contained liver.

All I recall is the saying at the time...something to the effect...
"She had more aches and pains than Carters had little pills."

(you can fill in most anything in the first part of the sentence)

Madhatter,
that is what I always heard when I was growing up. "Carter's little liver pills" was used along with "the price of tea in India" or "rice in China" to describe huge quantities.
At least they didn't get to Carter's peanuts in Georgia.lol!

Oh, elfie. elfie. elfie...

In the south, we love boiled peanuts, hon. Salty...with the shells kind of soft-ish. During the summer, vendors set up little spots along the route to the coast, selling freshly-boiled (or "boilt") goobers. Some even branch out to include the hot and spicy version.

I think they are an acquired taste. I grew up eating them. One of my editor friends from Texas has to stop on the way to the writer's conference at U of Georgia, just to get her fix.

Uh huh ... I see it now.
There are those two all important words: acquired taste!

Like, totally, gag me with a spoon!

But now I know. Next time I cruise through Tally and want to bring a gift ... hmmm.

(just got to remember to also pick up a clothes pin too; to clip my nose)

Okay, don't agree with the peanuts ... but I DID agree about those Cathead Biscuits. They are yummy!!!

I think boiled peanuts are grand. They taste a lot like pinto beans. I wonder if anyone has thought of refried boiled peanuts with cheese, salsa and a dab of sour cream.
Love,

I missed JoElle's comment about boiled peanuts. I LOVE them dang
thangs! If I have to get the canned variety, my favorite is Briar Patch
brand. I eat `em right out of the can, but for a special treat, heat
them up.

When we can find fresh green peanuts, we boil our own. Refried, Betty? Now that's something I have to try. Sounds yummy!
