This article emphasizes something we have been discussing lately:

Quote :
Whether to aspire or to despair, that is the question and which of these seeds flowers all depends upon which one you choose to grow.
--------------------------------
The key to leaving behind our self-created and self-limited world is found in our willingness to keep going, even when it "feels" like something bad is happening to us or that we're going "nowhere fast." The idea of quitting or turning back is the unfortunate option that occurs only when we have an incomplete understanding of any given situation. This is where higher self-knowledge becomes so important for our real inner progress.
---------------------------------
Every sustained effort you make to grow beyond yourself -- to help effect a real change in your present level of consciousness -- brings up in you a host of negative thoughts and feelings that can't wait to point out the negatives as to why this can't be done. We've all heard their whine within. They cry out, "no way," "why try?" "too tough" -- on and on it goes. Unexamined, these inner voices appear to have our best interests in mind. But they lie, and to see the truth of this deception is vital in our quest for self-victory.

Good point, Ann.

"Where there is a will there is a way."

We can do what we want to do. I remember a friend of mine complaining because her mother had allowed her to stop piano lessons.

I said "Don't blame your mother, if you want to play the piano you can learn now,"

She didn't bother even trying--easier to blame her mother.

That's sad, Alice. The thing is, those parental declarations are the hardest to break. What needs to happen first with your friend is to have her experiences with her mother validated.

Maybe start by saying, "Gee, that must have been hard, and you probably felt like she didn't think you could do it, or that it wasn't worthwhile."

Later, after she has had time to digest that, you can maybe say, "Your mother was wrong. If playing the piano is something you truly want to do, you can. Have you thought about starting lessons now? It's never too late.

Ann,

She didn't want the lessons--fought with her mother over having to practice, then blamed her mother because she finally gave up and said, "You don't have to take the lessons if you don't want them."

I was at war with our daughter over piano. She was allowed to quit at age 14. The friend thought I should make her keep at it. She, our daughter, asked for and took lessons again when in college.
