Such deadlock! I have never seen it.

Congressmen need to work for the good of the country and should not sign any agreements concerning anything--Grover Norquist
is not the only citizen of this country.

The rich people are buying their way here now. This is not a democracy, it is an aristocracy. Our votes are no longer equal.

What to do?
Throw Congress out! No pay No benefits --they should not be rewarded for being contrary.

There's a cool thing on the Internet; I tried to copy it to post it here but it would not copy. A new job description for Congressmen.

Dear Alice,

How can that be accomplished?

It is apparent that voting will not do it. Does it take a street action like civil rights? Who will organize it?

Remember the music of the civil rights movement? Would the musical stars do that today? You look at what Clint Eastwood did. Who of the celebrity world contradicted him?

No one, That is because they are all rich. Snort.

Love,

Betty

There should be a way to recall congressmen. The trouble is, most people do not know what the hell they do once they are in office and collecting their 175 thou per year or more. There is not one congress police that I know of. I think that every elected official should have to send to each and every household in their distrct and state a record of their votes and actions on legislations and whether they attended or not. We need accountability to the residents.

Here in Florida, Republican, Vern Buchannan must call my house once a month, at least, and leave a message about how great he is. I would rather have a detailed list of his votes. He has so much money that he sends glossy ads to my mail box at least 6 times a year. Why? I do not know. I have never voted for him and never would. He is a waste of time and money.

Love,

Betty

Dear Alice,

It takes money and people who will leave home and stand in the rain and snow and be beaten up by cops and put in jail to change this world.

PostSubject: Re: If We Can't/Won't Compromise--What Then?   If We Can't/Won't Compromise--What Then? EmptyThu Sep 13, 2012 6:48 pm

There is a story that I have heard more than once. My brother and his friends loved to tell it when they were young enough to get away with it, and even though we all knew every line, we would still laugh until we couldn't see through our tears every time someone brought it back out.

In those days, State Highway 87 did not just run north and south along the Sabine River. Once it reached Sabine Pass, on the Gulf of Mexico, it took a sharp turn westward and ran along the beach, through a little beach community called High Island, and on to the Bolivar Peninsula, where people could take a ferry boat across Galveston Bay into the city of Galveston itself. In 1962 or 3, Hurricane Carla changed all that. Now, or at least the last time I was in the area, all that's left of the highway are a few gigantic concrete chunks on either side of High Island, which can now be reached only by exiting Interstate 10 south, and crossing an antique drawbridge over the intra-coastal canal. But there is this story about a politician in High Island named Bubba-Carl Jackson who would send his election workers all around the town, knocking on the doors of his constituents and asking them to vote for Bubba-Carl in the next election for the city council.

At one door, an election worker drew the ire of the resident of a weathered beach house on the edge of a fenced-in salt grass pasture.

"Bubba-Carl? Is that the same Bubba-Carl Jackson that used to run the drawbridge?"
"I believe so, yes."
"Well you can fergit my vote. That man ain't got sense enough to be no city councilman, nossir."
"Perhaps if you could explain..."
"Well, you best come inside and set, 'cuz it's a looong story."
*****
"Some years ago," the constituent started, "I had me a fine prize bull; paid five thousand, three hundred, and eighty-four dollars and sixty-nine cents for him, but he was supposed to be worth the lot of it. Time came, though, the bull got sick. I called the vet, who said that the bull would be fine; he was just a little bit constipated.
"Now," the vet said, "all you got to do is get you a bucket and a funnel; fill the bucket with some soapy suds, tie that bull down good, and use the funnel to pour them suds into the bull's [behind]."

"Well, I thought that seemed easy enough, only I didn't have no funnel, so I used an old bugle that was hangin' over the far-place. It worked well enough, only I guess I didn't tie the bull down good enough, 'cuz I was almost done when the darn bull got excited and commenced to kickin' and got himself loose and headed outa the barn and on a run down the highway. I took off after him, but I were too slow, and he run all the way down the road and onto the drawbridge. And about that time, them suds commenced to workin' and that bugle commenced to blowin' and that darned fool Bubba-Carl heard the horn a-blowin' and commenced to raisin' that darned drawbridge."

By this time, the constituent had risen to his feet and waved his arms around as he continued his story.

"And what happened then was that my five thousand three hundred and eighty-four dollar and sixty-nine cents prize bull kept a-runnin' up the bridge and over the open edge and fell down into that canal and drowned himself." He stopped to breathe a minute and finished, "so they ain't no way that I would vote for Bubba-Carl 'cuz it seems a durn sure thing that anybody who cain't tell a boat whistle from a bull with a bugle up its b**t ain't got the sense to be no city councilman."

Politicians are the same everywhere and at every level, it sometimes seems.

Ann and Alice for President/VP (top of the ticket choice up to you).

Personally, I'm thinking of running for Congress. I'm sure I'll win as an I, R or D as long as I change my name to Noneofthe Above.

In my experience, people who were beaten by parents to keep them in 'control' and adhering to the parents ideas, beat their own (mentally or physically) children for the same reason. I have found that not much thought is in the consideration that it is the next generation. A monkey see, monkey do thing. Mindless reflex. No respect for a new mind that is growing and trying to find his/her own way.

I see this no matter the economic standing of the family. People consider the child as a possession. Oh! people will deny it, but it is true.

So, to break free of these bonds the child has to almost leap off the end of the earth...so to speak.

Erase the past and make a new path. I see no hope for the world if the youth of this world does not make a new path. I know that is unclear......but the ony way.

Love,

Betty

I applaud France for trying to take responsibility for their debts. Taxing the super rich is similar to our top 1% who have escaped fair taxation. How to do this will always be a problem. There is no easy way.

Really, the super rich of this country are not complaining about making their taxes fair - not complaining. They are not saying that reducing their taxes will help create jobs. They are ready to be taxed higher. Ready and willing. They know they are getting off easy.

What they to want is free reign to have no government regulation on any business or industry or profit-making wall street enterprise or banking or.....

All this republican talk about not taxing the rich and applying a tax reduction across the board is so much pr fluff with no audience, just attempts to make it look like something - I don't even know what.

My pitiful income is just enough over the line to pay taxes. So be it. I have always been willing to pay my fair share - fair share. I am grateful to have enough to owe some tax, right? I just don't have enough to hide it in a bank account in the Cayman Islands. Whatever percent fits, I pay. I don't have enough to itemize, so no gain there. I'm just at the edge of Romney's 47-49% - whew! I'd hate to be stuck with those people who pay no taxes, are dependent, and don't take responsibility for myself. I'm glad I count! I'd hate to be a no-good, non-tax paying useless at the voting booth person.

It just seems strange to pay taxes on Social Security that was derived from my payment into the annuity system. It feels like taxes on taxes - first my income was less all my working life to pay into SS and now it's less to pay for receiving SS. Oh, well.

There's one way to make sure everyone pays their fair

share, get rid of the old tax system, too confusing, too

many loopholes. Have a VAT Tax 30% on everything except

food, the Govt. would collect so much money the National

debt would be paid off in no time.....
