| Hello everybody,
This is an article I wrote about the various design styles and how they influence the success of a book.
There are many different styles of book cover designs, and choosing the right one is essential to grabbing the attention of your target audience. A professional book cover designer can work closely with you when choosing the elements of your cover, using their in-depth knowledge of color schemes and various styles to create the most polished and professional outer package for your work. Remember that your book cover design tells readers a lot about the actual text, and it's important to portray the right image in order for your work to be successful.
The color scheme of your book design can tell your potential readers a lot about what to expect. Different colors promote different moods, and these moods are reflected back onto what readers see when glancing over potential next reads. Your book has only seconds to stand out from amongst hundreds of other titles, and choosing the right color scheme is a step closer to successfully grabbing your target audience's attention.
For example, blue is a color highly associated with calming and relaxing moods, and it's perfect to include in a color scheme for a beach read or an inspirational autobiography. Red is associated with energy, passion and anger, making it the perfect fit for thrillers or paranormal romance novels. Green is a calming and refreshing color, symbolizing nature. That makes it the perfect color for books focusing on the environment. Regardless of your genre and your topic, finding the right color scheme is essential in communicating to potential readers the tone and content of your work.
In addition to the color scheme, the overall book design style is an important aspect to take into consideration. There are many popular design styles utilized on covers today, including grunge, iconic, traditional and modern, just to name a few. Grunge designs are incredibly popular on young adult fiction titles, while modern styles are popular on cutting-edge literary works.
A book cover design communicates to readers a lot about what's inside the covers. You wouldn't expect a lighthearted beach read to utilize a black and red color scheme with grunge stylings, just as you wouldn't expect a darker horror novel to have a color scheme of pinks and blues. By just glancing at the design, potential readers learn information about the genre, content, style and professional quality of the text, and it's essential to a book's success to get these details right. Using a professional book designer can help guide you through these decisions, as well as create a polished package that will give your book the best possible chance at success.
Hope you've enjoyed my little tips in designing a book cover.
Best wishes, Ana |

| Dear Ana, I have read all your posts and looked at your website. If there is one thing I need is Cover help. I have done all my covers from what is available as public domain images. Some are good and some are uck.....my own opinion. I, however have no money. I cannot hire anyone to do anything. Knowing that, if you want to look at my covers, I would be pleased for any free advice. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text&field-keywords=Betty+Fasig&x=13&y=25 Love, Betty |

| I heard a report on NPR regarding book covers and their impact. It seems the digital ebook covers are raising controversial issues. Publishers previously had major graphics departments to present an author with the cover that a patron wishes to take off the book store shelf, handle and buy. The covers included cutouts, sliced pages, special papers, holograms and miscellaneous graphic gimmicks. The hard copy covers included everything from author bio to book synopsis to major reviewer quotes and great pictures. Then, they were confronted with determining whether their covers will show well in an ebook thumbprint.
Ebook covers? The rulebook is still out there. The commentator indicated they don't matter. People don't thumb through ebooks; they buy them based on reviews and recommendations. The value of the cover is negligible - maybe....the jury is out. |

| I don't know - the online cover pic at Kindle, etc is still the first image the prospective buyer sees.

| I think ebook covers are still a questionable issue. I think they matter. I think the thumbnail bit is a consideration also. All that jacket info is missing, however, which helped sell books from the shelves. |

| Rarely do I like covers that use public domain photos. They just look, I don't know, generic. I've always preferred the hand drawn or painted covers, and it helps that I can do that myself so I don't have to pay anyone for my covers. |

| Many publishers without a large graphics departments will take a stock photo and photoshop it to get a painted effect. It's quite effective.
I do know the speaker on the NPR report was quite adamant that a book cover should be done by a professional and detracts from sales if it is not "perfect." Sounded a little old school to me - you know, graphics at a New York publisher. |
