I believe most people are good.  It is the exception about whom we hear and who does so much damage often to so many.  Survival drives some good people to do things against their nature - to feed children or parents or even themselves.  Fear and greed keeps the world divided so that a few control the resources thus creating angst and potential dangerous behavior among those at the subsistence level.

It brings to mind how often we lose sight that we are all the creations of our God, however we define the divine spirit that put the universe in motion.  I must remind myself often that I allow myself to become irritable on the phone and am sometimes less than cordial to people unseen, just doing their job.  Every person deserves respect and caring.  Period.  This young man makes that point clear in such a simple, unselfish way.  And the humanity is returned in kind.  We often make ungenerous assumptions about people down and out.  I don't know the stats, but most of the street people are probably in need of counseling and care and a means to support themselves.  I doubt they started life and said in their youth, "well, I'll spend my last years living in the elements trying to protect what few possessions I have left."

I wrote in Arirang a true story from my own life.  As a young woman I had a friend at work who dressed way above her job as a filing clerk.  She was in her 50's.  We shared a ride and thus became known to each other.  I was invited to lunch at her tiny, one room studio apartment that was furnished with some fine antiques and we dined on luxurious china, a few pieces from a glass cabinet.  It was eerie.  Then she told me how she had lived the jet set life with her businessman spouse, traveled the world, collected stuff and places and wealth.  Then, between selling one business and buying another, he was struck will a long-lasting illness with no insurance.  His illness consumed all their wealth and by the time he expired and everyone collected their due, she had nothing left.  She had no skills.  She rented the small dwelling and felt fortunate to file.

I swore I would never end up like that.  One day in later years I looked around.  All my worldly goods were sold because of the sailboat lifestyle followed by divorce and I was between jobs.  I had no insurance.  I was one illness away from living on the street.  It was sobering.  I remembered my friend.

The Indians had it right about walking in another's moccasins.

I believe most people are bad. True some have a mask that makes them look good, but their deeds, and those they support show what they are. There is nothing that will make a bad person into a good person. True many make error, but those who change show they were never bad.
I posted this on Joe's thread, and Ill post it here. It explains better than I can;

This may be hard to understand, but there are two types of people on planet Earth; The wheat, and the tars. The wheat are the good guys, and the tars the bad. Jesus spoke of these two different seed lines.

Then Jesus sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel weeds of the field." He answered them, "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the children of the Kingdom; and the darnel weeds are the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. As therefore the darnel weeds are gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

—Matthew 13:36-43, World English Bible

I know those who don't believe in the Bible this means nothing...I did not post it to change anyone.

There's a little bit of bad in the best of us, and a little bit of good in the worst of us, Domenic.

I agree with DK that there is good in everyone.  Sometimes it takes patience and kindness to bring it out or to even see it.
Often we hear people say that they have nothing to give.  Their take on life has been reduced to money.  Giving of yourself to another person is a great gift with lasting value.

My wife was admitted to the Pfalz klinik this morning.  As I walked the halls and saw people in wheel chairs and/or just sitting, they looked up.  I smiled and they returned the smile.  Then I greeted them and they returned the greeting.  I felt good and I believe they felt good also if only for a short moment.  I was reminded that we are in control and that people react to us. In Joe's video, just sitting with the street person was appreciated.
If you look for the bad in people you will see it.  The same goes for looking for the good.  No one is born bad or good. JMO

True Shelagh, none of us are good. But some of us won’t get an automatic assault weapon, go into a group of people and just start killing. I would put them on the bad side.

Those who start wars, and million die, I would say are bad. Respect is a big them to me. If I am seated, and a women has to stand because there are no empty seats…I will give her my seat. I even open doors for people. I think it’s a good thing when people put other people first. What I see today is a, “ME,ME.ME world.” Driving used to be fun. Now most people act like it is their road. When a store puts items on sale, people trample over each other…ME,ME,ME…not good. People don’t show strangers respect. Many don’t even respect their self?

Most people obey the law out of fear of going to jail. I have seen how good(sic) people act when there is no law.

They are talking about sending people to Mars…a one way trip. They will have no law, or jail…if they send people there, it will turn lawless. We live in a world were even the police are bad. That is not saying all police are bad, but if some are good, why don’t they stop those who are bad?

The same sex thing I believe is bad:
Those for same sex march more naked than dressed. If straight people did that...they would go to jail?

My ex had a male friend who was gay. She invited him over for dinner. We were all sitting at the table (with my two kids) and this jerk starts talking about his sex life. How he and his friend get these little mice like creatures, and put them up their butts, and how good it feels. I kicked him out of my house. I don't have a feeling that gay people are normal. Now the law says we who are not gay have to treat those who are as normal? Not me. They can have their gay life, but keep it out of my face.

Same sex marriage is on a different thread to this, Domenic. This is about showing a little kindness.

You know how Yanks are, Shelagh. We get our threads crossed? Are there still Yanks in the UK that are, " over paid, over sexed, and over there?" I'll bet the girls miss that.
